What is Cellulite?

A health article about Cellulite from Your Health Online the A to Z directory of dealing with Health Problems & nutritional Self Care Strategies

When you look at your legs, you might feel frustrated about the lumpy, bumpy appearance lying beneath your skin – but what is cellulite?  Cellulite is actually just a pattern of fat deposits under the skin.  Because fat is deposited unevenly in some area, it gives a lumpy appearance.

While some people never have any cellulite, others seem to have an extra supply of it.  It tends to show up in places where people have more fat in general.  The top places are the buttocks, hips, thighs, and belly.

It’s also called “cottage cheese” because it gives a similar appearance to the skin.  And while it may seem like this is a primarily female problem, men can actually get cellulite as well.  Perhaps because the style of men’s clothing is different it doesn’t seem as obvious when they have it.

Cellulite doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you and it doesn’t harm you physically.  However, it can make you feel bad about the way you look in shorts or your favorite swimsuit.  Why do some people have cellulite while others don’t?

Cellulite is not a disease or a disorder, but it can make a difference to the figure and cause a great deal of concern. Cellulite is a kind of fat tissue in the subcutaneous layer of the skin that contains constricting bands of connective tissue.

Cellulite is that lumpy, rippled skin appearance common to men and women of all sizes and ages, that one can not seem to get rid of.

Cellulite is not necessarily a factor of body weight.

You don't have to be heavy to have cellulite. Cellulite is alleged to be a special type of "fat gone wrong," a combination of fat, water, and "toxic wastes" that the body has failed to eliminate.

Some of the common symptoms of Cellulite

Most people tend to think that cellulites are only present to people who are obese. That is why they sometimes associate cellulite with fats and obesity.

Actually, even if cellulite refers to the chain of wrinkled “fat cells” and “subcutaneous connective tissues” beneath the layer of the skin, it should never be associated with people who are fat or obese. In fact, there are many people who have cellulite but are not fat at all and there are many people who look thin but who have high levels of visecral (internal) fat that is putting their health at risk.

In reality, nobody knows the main reason why some people accumulate cellulite. However, there are some factors that health experts are considering such as the structure of the fat cells or the poison that entered the body. Some experts say it may be caused by some hormonal changes in the body. But none of these things has been proven to cause cellulites.

However, the only main reason why most of the cellulite cases are abundant in women is that the connective tissues of women are more rigid and firm than men.

Hence, whenever a woman gets fat, the fatty cells tend to swell and get bigger. It creates a protruding appearance to the skin producing an “orange peel” look.

For this reason, women are more prone to cellulite than men. That is why it is important for women to be more careful on their body as they have higher chances of accumulating cellulite.

People who suffer from the condition of cellulite may experience issues psychologically, as well as emotionally. Society imposes some very strict guidelines on what is attractive and what is not attractive.

For people with conditions of the skin, such as cellulite, these strict guidelines on what makes a person attractive are extremely overwhelming.

A person may experience depression, mood swings, poor self-esteem, and many other mental issues because of cellulite.

Other skin issues that can have the same psychological and emotional effects as cellulite include scars, acnes, wounds that have left scars, and birthmarks.

Types of Cellulite

Cellulite is that bumping skin effect that looks like an orange peel and is commonly found on the backs of your thighs.

Most women have cellulite—even famous models and actresses, although theirs has been magically removed with photo editing programs.

How is the cellulite formed ?

All the muscles of the body are wrapped in a padding of fatty connective tissue.

The fatty cells of the padding, bathed in a liquid medium, are held in place by a network of fibres, nourished and cleansed by body fluids.

These fluids cleanse the fatty tissue, when this process is slowed down, the tissue is flooded with waste materials that thicken into gelatin-like substance and hardens to form immovable pockets.

What is the difference between cellulite and fat?

Though everyone has a smooth layer of fat, individual amounts depend on weight, lifestyle and genetics.

This fat layer is an insulator for the body and cushions the organs, muscles and nerves.

Cellulite, on the other hand, is lumpy and provides no padding whatsoever.

It only occurs in certain areas of the body: the thighs, buttocks, abdomen and breasts. When men get cellulite, it tends to be on the neck and abdomen.

What Causes Cellulite?

Most of the answer can be found in your DNA.  It seems that people who have more cellulite just come by it naturally.

In fact, some people have cellulite who are at ideal weight.  But that doesn’t mean that there’s nothing you can do to change the situation.

There are a few lifestyle factors that can affect whether or not you have cellulite.  For example, people who have more stress are more likely to have cellulite.  Taking birth control pills can also contribute to increased cellulite.

If you’re not very active, you may also find that you have more cellulite.  And if you tend to be on the heavy side, you may see more cellulite.  Extra weight can increase cellulite’s appearance under the skin.

Many people suggest that cellulite will start to develop once a female hits puberty. With the wide array of fluctuating hormones, it is quite possible for a female to experience a variety of changes to the body, including cellulite.

Other people suggest that cellulite occurs due to the fact that the person has too many toxins in their body and they do not maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Whatever the reason, cellulite is an uncomfortable condition that many people wish to resolve as soon as possible.

What are the causes of cellulite - so that you can fight for the reduction or to get rid of cellulite

  • Hormonal changes at puberty, during pregnancy, pre/post menopausal.
  • Crash diets increase the risk of cellulite because the body thinks it's starving and by attempting to compensate, it assists in cellulite formation. All saturated fats help build cellulite. These fats block the arteries and get trapped in the tissue as well, preventing sufficient waste and toxin elimination.
  • Anomalies, concerning enzymatic or hormonal/endocrine functions an example would be, too much estrogen, which may increase fat storage.
  • Heredity may be the reason.
  • Lack of exercise reduces the blood supply promoting fluid retention in cellulite areas of the body.
  • Insufficient water intake. Water helps the waste system operate, flushing toxins from your body. Drink 7 glasses of water a day.
  • Poor lifestyle consisting of lack of exercise, excess consumption of saturated fat and sugar, and poor hydration.
  • Smoking, it is not only bad for the skin and lungs, but it weakens the skin by causing constriction of capillaries. It further damages the connective tissue that causes the dimpling effect of cellulite, too.

Risk Factors: Who is prone to
Cellulite?

Cellulite is not a medical condition.

Cellulite is the procedure of fatty tissue creating deposits in certain areas of the body and then doing so in such a way that these lumps of deposits can be seen on the external surface of the skin.

Many people believe that cellulite only affects individuals that are overweight. This is not true either. Cellulite can affect a person of any size.

Prevention of Cellulite

Many people believe that cellulite is a condition that they are unable to remedy. While it may prove to be extremely difficult for the person who suffers from cellulite to get rid of it, it is quite possible to eliminate cellulite.

However, it is very important that you know ahead of time that it will not be easy and that you will need to implement a variety of lifestyle changes in order to eliminate cellulite from your body.

These changes will need to occur in both your exercise program, as well as you diet. If your body is not healthy in one way or another, you will most likely develop cellulite.

With the many cases of obese people having cellulites in their body, most of them believed that their cellulites are caused by being too fat.

Even though not all those who are obese develop cellulites, being overweight can really trigger the development of cellulites. This is because too much fat under the skin tend to push the connective tissue creating a strain on the skin. Thus, cellulites form.

However, this is still dependent on the structure of the cells. If an individual’s cell structure does not inhibit the tendency to bulge or expand even if fat deposits accumulate, then there will be no cellulites.

So, the most important thing to remember here is to keep those connective tissues firm and strong and avoid accumulating excess fats so as to avoid the development of cellulite.

While cellulite can be genetic, there are a few things you can do to reduce cellulite and its appearance.

Lifestyle changes to consider include stress reduction, weight loss, and a healthier diet.

You’ll also want to exercise to tone the muscles beneath the skin.  This will help you to diminish the appearance of cellulite.

When To Seek Medical Attention For Cellulite

Cellulite is a very common condition, but it is not considered a medical condition. Many people become confused when they hear this information.

When you develop cellulite, it is simply a section of your body that has an excessive amount of fat tissue that has built up to the point that it is visible to the naked eye on certain parts of the body.

Many people who develop cellulite are extremely uncomfortable with the way that cellulite appears on their body and become self-conscious about it.

If you’re looking for a treatment that’s more aggressive, you may want to meet with a dermatologist.  You might be able to participate in laser therapy.  Laser therapy for cellulite actually works to massage away the cellulite below the skin.

Laser therapy and radio frequency therapy are non-invasive but they are pricey.  However, they’re the most effective of the medical treatments for ridding the body of cellulite and improving appearance.

A more invasive medical treatment is liposuction.  This is where the fat cells causing the problem are actually suctioned out of the body.  This procedure can be effective but does have side effects and is very expensive.

Treatment/Therapy:

There’s nothing more frustrating than losing weight or exercising only to find that your cellulite doesn’t go away.  If you have cellulite, don’t despair.  In this day and age there are many treatments for this cosmetic problem.

There are several treatments that can really help you to decrease the appearance of the cellulite.  These include creams, supplements, and some more complex procedures such as laser treatment and even liposuction.

The treatment for you will depend on the severity of your cellulite and its response to treatment.  For example, if creams and exercises are working you won’t need the more invasive types of procedures.  Understanding what is cellulite is the first step toward getting help for it.

There are varieties of treatment methods when it comes to cellulite. You can find various supplements that specialize in the removal of cellulite.

There are cellulite wraps that you can purchase as well. Many health stores carry an assortment of creams, lotions, and ointments that will assist in cellulite removal.

There are also pills that you can purchase that are supposed to assist in eliminating cellulite. Many people consider liposuction and other surgical ways to eliminate cellulite.

However, this can be a very challenging way to handle cellulite and may pose many complications for a person.

However, one of the main ways that doctors suggest to eliminate cellulite is to ensure that you eat healthy foods and maintain a high level of exercise to ensure that you are burning as much fat as possible.

However, it is important to note that no one has yet pointed out a single cause of cellulite.

It has been proposed that cellulite is associated with obesity, but we can see that this is not always true.

Others suggest that gender, genetics, and race play a role in the cause of cellulite.

It is difficult to treat something when you don’t know the cause, but scientific researchers are making headway.

Diet and exercise play a role in the reduction of cellulite and although this won’t make your cellulite disappear completely, it can help the condition from worsening. Topical treatments can help as well.

Treatments your doctor recommends usually include ingredients derived from vitamin A, like retinol.

Liposuction and other cosmetic surgeries are also available to help you deal with cellulite.

The most common remedy is found in creams or gels.  These work by firming the skin to decrease the appearance of cellulite. There are also creams that have herbal components for a more natural approach.

There are several active ingredients in the creams and gels that work on the skin.  The most common ones are retinol and caffeine. Both of these actually affect the skin – not the cellulite.  But by firming the skin or making it a bit thicker, the cellulite isn’t as noticeable.

There are many cellulite products on the market today that have proven to be effective in removing cellulite from the body.

Some of these effective cellulite products include Avotone Bodysculpt, Revitol Cellulite Solution, and Lip Sculpt Gel.

These products have all been tested and proven as effective cellulite products.

They have all been noted in having excellent customer service and a return policy that includes the reimbursement of your money.

Self Care strategies for Living with Cellulite

Cellulite can be gradually eliminated by detoxification of body and speeding up metabolism. A healthy metabolism will remove cellulite forever.

  • Stop eating foods high in saturated and hydrogenated fats.
  • Drink at least 10 glasses of water daily.
  • Doing regular exercise or physical activity.
  • Stop skipping meals. eat a healthy diet at least 3 times a day.

Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables—low in calories yet packed with nutrients—and drink fruit and vegetable

The cheapest and most natural way to rid your body of cellulite is to change some lifestyle factors.  If you’re highly stressed, you’ll want to work to manage stress so that you can actually change the way your body stores fat.

Exercise programs that target muscles below the skin in areas where cellulite is prominent can help to reduce cellulite and its appearance.  Drinking water can also help to flush out fat and plump up the skin.

On the other end of the spectrum are invasive medical procedures.  You can have laser treatment to help firm the skin and get rid of cellulite.  Liposuction is another treatment which actually removes cellulite from the body.  However, it’s expensive and requires time for recovery.

Where most people choose to focus their efforts for cellulite reduction is somewhere in the middle.  There are several types of cellulite creams that can be found in your pharmacy.  These creams have active ingredients that work to firm the skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite beneath it.

Some common ingredients in cellulite creams include caffeine, retinol, and herbal ingredients.  All of these creams really work on the skin, not the cellulite.  What they do is help to firm and tighten the skin to push cellulite below the surface and reduce its appearance.

While the creams don’t actually get rid of cellulite, they do make your skin look better – and that’s the point, really.  These creams work if you use them consistently over time.  Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions before you get started.

If you’re frustrated with the appearance of cellulite on your body, there’s no need to despair.  You have many options for improving your appearance.  Cellulite reduction can happen in more than one way – you just need to choose a method that fits your lifestyle best.

Start an exercise routine program.

Transforming food into fat seems all too easy for most of us. Losing fat is far more difficult, and to accomplish this, we have only three alternatives: (1) decrease food intake and keep activity constant; (2) increase activity and keep food intake constant; or (3) combine both approaches: diet and exercise.

Physical activity can help reverse the results of inactivity. An hour of vigorous exercise burns up 300 to 600 calories. If you also cut 300 to 500 calories from your daily menu, you can also lose weight at the rate of one to two pounds a week.

Without exercise, you would have to eat 500 to 1,000 fewer calories a day to lose the same number of pounds in a week. Exercise is not for everyone who is over-fat, however. The severely obese person should exercise only under medical supervision to prevent strain on the cardiovascular system and connective tissue. And no one should restrict food intake drastically without consulting doctor.

Resorting to this kind of activity will only get the matter worse.  The problem is that he lost those connective tissues rather than excess fat.

For people who are prone to cellulites, this will be a greater problem. Losing connective tissues instead of fat by strict dieting can only make the skin more prone to greater problems but the fat cells are still there. That only means that the problem is not solved at all.

Hence, if you wish to loose those cellulites, it would be better to loose those fats first. The idea here is to burn those fats by increasing your metabolism by 7.5% to 28% more than your normal rate.

It is for this reason that exercising is an important factor in losing cellulite. So for a more cellulite free body, always engage in an exercise routine.

If you’re looking for more natural therapies, alternative medicine could be an option to consider.  There are various types of massage that are thought to be able to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Another alternative medicine therapy is called mesotherapy.  This is a process of injecting a solution beneath the skin.  There are various formulas for this solution but it usually includes some chemicals, herbs, hormones, and enzymes.

These are thought to help reduce cellulite.  While this therapy may provide results, it can also have side effects such as irritation and infection.   Make sure to do your homework before participating in alternative cellulite therapy to make sure it’s safe for you.

You can also reduce the appearance of cellulite when wearing tight fitting clothes, by wearing a girdle garment.

Drinking a lot of water can help to keep your skin hydrated and flush fat from your body.  Eating foods rich in antioxidants can also help you to have firm, beautiful skin.  Another risk factor for cellulite is stress.

By working to reduce stress you can actually affect how your body stores fat.  Stress reduction ideas include better time management, meditation, and yoga.  You’ll find that not only do you look better - you’ll feel better, too.

If you take hormonal birth control, you may also want to consider changing your methods.  These can actually increase the appearance of cellulite on your body.  You may not be willing to change this part of your lifestyle, but if you are you may see results.

If you’ve exhausted your lifestyle changes – or if you just aren’t able to make them right now – you may want to look at some other types of therapies for cellulite.

The easiest type of treatment includes products you can add to your skin.

One of the most common ways that people reduce the cellulite that develops on their body is to receive a wrap made especially for eliminating cellulite in the body.

A cellulite wrap normally consists of taking an assortment of various substances and compounds to form a base that is withheld in the wrap.

The wrap is then place on the area where the cellulite occurs.

Some of the common ingredients that are contained on a cellulite wrap are caffeine, an assortment of various vitamins, some important minerals, various types of firming creams, and possibly an assortment of products from the sea, like seaweed.

Diet change strategies:

It is very important that you practice good eating habits.

You should ensure that you eat plenty of fruits, and an assortment of vegetables.

This will ensure that your body is receiving the proper amount of nutrition to ensure that all areas of the body work closely together to ensure proper functioning.

A person should also make certain that they receive the correct amount of exercise on a regular basis.

Whatever method of treatment you choose, it is simply best to remember that you are not alone.

No treatment will help you if you don’t feel good about yourself with or without cellulite.

If you have concerns about your appearance, talk to a professional as soon as possible for help.
