You blocked out a couple of hours to go to the gym, but you’re still sitting on the couch. You’re just too tired to exercise. An active lifestyle gives you more energy, but it can be difficult to get started.
How does exercise make you feel more lively? It increases blood flow, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to your organs.
It also strengthens your muscles and makes your heart and lungs function more efficiently.
Working out will become easier once you establish a consistent routine. Until then, use these suggestions to help you through the early days.
Increasing Your Energy Levels
There are many ways to turn yourself into more of a dynamo. Adopt these habits to go along with your fitness program.
1. Eat a balanced diet.
Fill your plate with vegetables, fruits, and other whole foods. Include protein and complex carbohydrates in each of your meals and snacks. Cut back on processed foods.
2. Sleep well.
Stick to a consistent bedtime that allows you 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. Use a fan or pink noise machine to block out background noise. Turn off your devices, and avoid heavy snacks in the late hours.
3. Stay hydrated.
Fatigue is often a sign that your body is low on fluids. Start your day with a big glass of water, and carry a bottle.
4. Manage your commitments.
Maybe you’re trying to do too much. Decide on your priorities, and plan your schedule around them. Concentrate on the activities that are most relevant to your major goals.
5. Spend time outdoors.
Green spaces are invigorating. Eat your lunch in the park, and go camping on weekends.
6. Reduce stress.
Think positive, and practice self-care. Spend time with friends and family who give you support and encouragement. Talk about your feelings. Take breaks throughout the day.
Making Exercise Easier
It’s important to take a gradual approach to working out, especially if you’ve been sedentary for a while.
You’ll reduce your risk of injuries, and you’ll be more likely to stick with your new resolutions.
1. Take a walk.
It’s simple, free, and requires no equipment. You can start with just 5 minutes daily and increase your time and speed to suit your goals and abilities.
2. Do mini-sessions.
Short bursts of activity have become a major fitness trend. They give you more scheduling flexibility and the same health benefits as longer sessions. Do a few yoga poses or jump rope several times a day.
3. Warm up.
Moving takes less effort when you activate your muscles first. Warming up increases your heart rate and blood flow. Spend a few minutes marching in place or riding a stationary bike. Remember to cool down too.
4. Have fun.
Exercise can be enjoyable. Invite a friend to join you. Create a soundtrack with your favorite tunes. Sign up for a dance class or play volleyball on the beach.
5. Listen to your body.
Pay attention to symptoms that mean you need time off. That includes regular rest days and avoiding exercise when you have a fever or symptoms below the neck, like an upset stomach.
6. Talk with your doctor.
If fatigue interferes with your daily activities or you’re concerned about what exercises are safe for you, let your doctor know. They can give you recommendations tailored to your individual needs.
Increased energy is just one of the many benefits of regular exercise. You’ll also strengthen your heart and bones and help protect yourself from many chronic conditions.
An active lifestyle will make you happier and healthier.
