People talk about the energy balance between the calories we eat and the calories we burn. It is really simple to add up how many calories we consume and then figure out how many calories we burn. The trouble is that many people then assume that difference between the two numbers will translate into fat burnt, or fat stored as body fat.
For example, if we are eating 2,500 calories of food a day and we are burning 2,000 then the difference is around 500 calories a day, about 3,500 a week. It seems logical that we would then gain weight at a pound a week, a kilo a fortnight since a pound of fat requires around 3,500 calories to form, or around 7,000 for a kilo.
The assumption is that the reverse is also true, if we eat or drink only 2,000 calories and we burn 2,500 calories then the simple maths shows that 500 calories deficit between what we consume, and what we burn has a direct link to body fat.
This is so simple that is sounds almost too good to be true.
The problem is that it does not take into account what our body is doing. If we are not giving our bodies the nutrition it needs to run efficiently then our system will read the lack of nutrition as lack of food. It will then slow our metabolic rate so that we burn energy more slowly.
What does that mean? Low energy levels, having a nights sleep and waking up tired, energy drop outs in the middle of the afternoon, allergies playing up, generally not feeling very good.
On top of this our body will then hold on to body fat like its life depends on it ….. literally!
A deficient diet may be great for weight loss for a week or two, and you will hear people brag about their great start on a diet, but come back in 3 or 4 weeks and see what is happening. Often it is not pretty.
The only way to reduce calories significantly, while still keeping metabolism high, is to give the body everything it needs to feed it properly.
That means all the protein, the carbohydrates, the vitamins, the minerals, the essential oils, the botanical factors and the water.
If your body is getting all these things in a form that it can absorb and use at a cellular level then it will build new cells that are strong and healthy and you will stay well.
In that case your metabolism will stay high and your overall health will stay high or, if you had been a bit run down, then you will often see an improvement in personal energy and general wellness as your body builds up healthier cells and your metabolism becomes more efficient.
The only way I know how to do this is with a balanced nutrition program. Eat well, make sensible food and drink choices but also go further. Investigate supplements to make up for the nutritional factors that our modern diets are lacking.
If you can give your body everything it needs to stay healthy and also keep your calories under the level you are using every day then you will find that your body will work with you to shed extra pounds and kilos that it does not need to be carrying around every where.
If you get the basics right then your body will be working to help your weight loss and not fighting against you. THAT is when things get easy.
