Many people are at risk of stroke but don’t even know it. It’s important to know what factors can cause stroke and what you can do to prevent it if you’re at risk.
The good news is that there are many things you can do to stop strokes before they ever get started.
The number one risk factor for stroke is high blood pressure. Blood pressure is the measure of how much pressure your blood places on the blood vessel walls as it moves through your circulatory system.
It’s important to monitor your blood pressure to determine if you’re at risk of stroke. Normal blood pressure is 120/80.
The top number, called systolic, is the highest point when your heart is actually beating. The lower number, called diastolic, is the lowest point between beats.
If your blood pressure is higher than 120/80 you may need to make some lifestyle changes in order to return it to normal range.
In addition to changing your lifestyle, your healthcare provider may also want you to take medication.
It’s important to keep track of your blood pressure. You can purchase a blood pressure monitor for your home that can be used at any time to take measurements.
Keeping a log for your blood pressure will help you to monitor it carefully.
Having high cholesterol can also put you at higher risk of stroke.
Cholesterol can cause the blood vessels to become clogged and lead to a higher risk of developing blood clots.
It can also lead to hardening of the arteries that makes them more likely to become ruptured.
An irregular heartbeat called atrial fibrillation can also lead to an increased risk of stroke.
If you’ve been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation it’s important to have regular appointments with your cardiologist to keep it under control and reduce your risk of stroke.
Diabetes can also increase your risk of stroke. This is because as diabetes becomes more advanced it can become difficult to control your blood pressure and your cholesterol.
It’s important that if you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes that you make lifestyle changes and purse a course of treatment.
Lifestyle factors such as obesity can also increase your risk of stroke.
Smoking also leads to an increased risk of blood clots. Heavy drinking can also increase your risk.
A diet that’s high in fat and salt can increase your risks as well.
In order to reduce your risk factors of stroke, it’s important to take an inventory of your current health and make necessary changes.
