A common eating disorder among teenagers is obesity. Obesity arises when they have too much fat or when the weight of the child is over the normal weight in relation to their height. There are different methods for calculating the appropriate weight of a person.
Two methods are the Body Mass Index and the waist-hip ratio. If you can, try both methods and see which one works better for you. Although eating disorders like Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating can attribute to obesity, those might not be the only reasons for getting overweight.
Additionally, obesity seems to be prevalent among teenagers which, surprisingly is the age when a child is supposedly energetic and should be maintaining a physically fit body. Here are some other factors that could lead to obesity. Understanding them may help us understand how to combat the obesity problem.
The internet and computer games have become the fad for several years and as such, people tend to sit, relax and let their fingers do the work. There are a large variety of movies on television and the internet that have captured the interest of the teenagers.
All these technology have contributed to a lack of exercise among the teenagers and resulted in a high incidence of obesity. Teenagers enjoy eating junk food, such as burgers, fries and shakes and these have become readily available all over the country.
Fast food restaurants selling junk food are in every neighborhood and are open 24 hours daily. The food is relatively cheaper than other types of restaurants and they can be cooked and served fast.
Teenagers will not have to cook their own food, wash dishes and other household chores.
Genetics is another possible cause for obesity. Obese parents may have obesity genes that were passed on to the child. This condition can be cured with proper medical attention.
Although genes may have some participation in the obesity, we should also consider the likelihood that obese parents might have poor eating habits and condone food that are non-nutritious and contributes to obesity within the family.
Another reason for obesity among teenagers is hormonal changes. The metabolism changes as they grow up and their digestive process might slow down and cause weight gain.
Illnesses, such as hypothyroidism and depression could also cause hormonal changes resulting in obesity. These situations are rare and can be addressed medically. Another consideration is the age factor. A person’s physical activity might slow down as they grow older.
Psychological reasons are probably the most prevalent reasons why people overeat. People rationalize that the food tastes good and they indulge in stuffing themselves to the utmost. There may be other emotional reasons or feelings, such as anger, boredom, depression that will make a person eat even if they are not hungry.
It might appear as a safe way of letting loose of your emotions but in the long run, you will become obese and suffer the consequences. Some people eat out of habit without even realizing that they are munching food, like peanuts or tidbits.
Knowing these possible reasons may help you find a solution to fight obesity.
