Is Your Sleep Area Stealing Your Energy?

It’s no secret that getting enough sleep is a very important step in living an energized life. It may sound easy, but there are lots of things that could contribute to you not being able to sleep enough.

To sleep well, you need to be as comfortable as possible. Get the right kind of bedding for your personal preferences. Test out different mattresses to see what’s most comfortable for your body.

Try different types of pillows, comforters, etc. These items often come in different firmness as well, so see what would make you most relaxed. Make sure you also have curtains for your windows, specifically ones that will block out the light.

If you’re trying to go to bed before sundown, or sleep past sunrise, this will be very important so that you’re not kept awake or woken up due to the sunlight. You should get blackout curtains if this is an issue for you.

Blackout curtains are great because they keep the light out of your room. They also keep the heat out during the summer while trapping the heat in during the winter. You also need to keep your room at the right temperature.

Don’t make your room too hot or too cold, because this will only cause you to toss and turn all night, preventing you from getting any sleep. Find a comfortable temperature for you.

You may like being a little warmer at night, or you may like being cold. If you don’t have a heater or any way to be warm during the winter, try getting an electric blanket. It will keep you warm and comfortable during the cold nights.

Another huge part of staying well-rested is to keep technology out of the room while you’re trying to sleep. Before you even get in bed, an hour prior you should be getting off of your phone, laptop, TV, etc.

The blue light from the screens makes you feel more awake and decreases the amount of melatonin, (the sleep hormone), that your body produces. Not only does the blue light keep you awake, but social media will, too.

If you use your phone right before going to sleep, you’ll be way more tempted to stay on it even if you’re tired. Social media is distracting, and there’s always something new to find on there.

Because of that, it’s easier to become distracted by your phone and spend hours on it without even realizing it. You may try to limit yourself and tell yourself that you’ll only spend 10 minutes or so browsing before sleep, but next thing you know, you’ve been scrolling for hours and hours and you only have 4 hours left until you need to get up for work.

Making sure your sleep environment is perfect is crucial to having energy. Creating an unhealthy sleep space will prevent you from being able to get enough sleep and resting your body to be fully energized the next day.

The Dehydration Energy Drain

Becoming dehydrated is one of the most detrimental things you can do to your health and energy levels. Dehydration can negatively affect your physical and mental health, and it can also be a sign of underlying health conditions.

Dehydration most often occurs when you don’t drink enough water. To combat this, you should always carry bottled water with you. You can use plastic water bottles if you want, or you can get a reusable water bottle.

You should be drinking at least 8, eight ounce glasses of water a day. This totals 64 oz. You can find 64 oz water bottles, and you can also get a 32 oz water bottle that you refill twice a day.

The size of the water bottle really doesn’t matter, as long as you make sure to drink 64 oz of water throughout your day. When you get dehydrated, your physical health can be severely impacted in many different ways.

Dehydration can cause lethargy, headaches, dizziness, low blood pressure, passing out, fever, faster heart rate, and heat stroke. More serious health problems dehydration can cause include seizures, low blood volume, kidney issues, and death.

Being dehydrated can also take a toll on your mental health. It can cause anxiety, depression, mood swings, problems focusing, memory loss, and hallucinations due to hyponatremia, another symptom of dehydration.

It can also affect your energy levels, because you become lethargic and tired due to your muscles and heart becoming weak. Headaches due to dehydration can also keep you awake when you’re trying to sleep, causing a lack of energy.

You don’t have to only drink water to become re-hydrated. There are many ways to hydrate your body aside from drinking at least 64 oz of water per day. You can eat foods that contain higher water levels, such as watermelons, cucumbers, blackberries, celery, lettuce, and soup.

You can drink coconut water, which contains potassium and has energizing qualities to replace energy drinks and coffee, both of which contain caffeine. Caffeine is known to dehydrate you, because it’s a diuretic - it causes the body to become deprived of water.

Letting yourself get dehydrated is one of the worst, but easiest things you can do to yourself. It’s easy to replace water with better tasting, yet dehydrating drinks such as soda. However, you need to hydrate your body and drink the right amount of water in order to be energized and as healthy as possible.
