Getting out and about in the sun is important for maintaining good overall health and wellbeing. It helps us to increase those all-important Vitamin D levels that so many of us are lacking.
Though there is no question that the sun offers a number of benefits, it is also important to stay safe. Too much sun can cause damage and illness, so understanding the basics of sun protection is important.
Apply Sunscreen
Sunscreen is one of the most important factors to remember for staying safe in the sun.
Make sure you check the SPF of the product you are using, and that it is sufficient to help prevent burning. As a rule, the more pale your skin, the higher the SPF you should apply.
Remember that sun lotion needs to be reapplied periodically throughout the day, and after you have been swimming or relaxing in the water.
Drink Lots of Water
Hot weather means more of the fluid in our bodies is lost through sweat, and this means we are more likely to become dehydrated.
Make sure you are topping up your fluid levels throughout the day to help make up for that which has been lost.
Carry a water bottle with you wherever you go, and sip on it throughout the day to maintain good hydration.
Protect Your Head
When you are cold, a lot of the heat in your body escapes through your head, and so warm, wooly hats are advised. The summer brings the opposite problem.
Too much sun directly on your head increases your risk of heat stroke, and this can leave you feeling sick and unwell.
Cover your head when you are out in the sun. This can be done with a baseball cap, cute straw hat, or using cloths, and fabrics.
Wear Natural Fabrics
When the mercury rises, there is a temptation to shed clothes in an attempt to stay cool - but this can often have the opposite effect.
Exposing more of your skin to the sun can actually make you feel more hot and sweaty - as well as increase your chances of being burned.
Instead, opt for loose, natural fabrics, such as linen or cotton, and cover your arms, chest, and back.
Natural fabrics will help your skin breathe, and this helps you to stay cooler and more comfortable throughout the day.
Staying safe in the sun is important for maintaining your overall, long-term health and wellbeing. But don’t forget that getting time out in the sunshine and fresh air is also important.
The trick is to find a good balance of staying safe and having fun.
