How to Care For Your Elderly Parents at Home

As we grow old and our parents grow even older, what do we do for them? Do we reciprocate the love and affection they showered on us our whole lives? Or do we become nonchalant as if it doesn’t matter?

Many people choose to care for their parents as they age.

If you’re one of the people who made that choice, it can be hard to care for their needs as they get older. It’s important to look at ways to offer the best care for your parents at home as they turn old, bedridden, or vulnerable.

You may not be able to provide everything for them but you don’t have to. They only need your love, care, support, encouragement, and availability. Protecting them against physical, psychological, and emotional distress is enough.

To offer the best care for your parents, you need to understand their needs. Once you’ve done this, you can give them the support they require.
Study these tips to enable you to assess their everyday needs and where you can be most helpful:

1. Family support. Cooking a healthy and delicious meal, doing household chores, running errands, and sharing fond memories with them will bring joy and satisfaction. Do you know their favorite foods? Cook it for them out of the blue and see the excitement it offers.

2. Home safety. You need to ensure your parents are living in a safe home environment. A safe home environment should have optimum noise levels, illumination, ventilation, and temperatures.

* Have a suitable arrangement for furniture, knives, cables, and other things that can pose a trip, slip, or fall hazard.

3. Medical needs. Old age comes with a lot of health conditions. Routine medical check-ups, exercises, and treatments are good for them.

4. Social interaction. Social interaction can be good for brain health. Do you realize how good you feel when you spend time with friends and loved ones? That feeling is good for your elderly parents to keep them cheerful and active. They can’t afford not to interact with others. It’s a human need no matter how old they become.

After accessing their needs, the next step is to learn how to provide for them:

1. Understand what kind of care your parents need. It is essential to find out what kind of caregiving activities your parents require.

* The easiest way to do this is by having a comprehensive list of their daily needs. You will then be able to identify the level of support you need to offer.

2. Identify how much care you can offer. Don’t overload yourself with tasks. A common mistake is that you may fall for this trap because of your love and affection for your parents.

* Ensure that the care you intend to offer is realistic. You may develop a health condition if you combine too much workload. Sometimes the needs of an elderly person become more than you can handle. If that’s the case, an in-home nurse or caregiver may be necessary, or you may have to consider an assisted care facility.

3. Ask for help. You are a human with limitations. Don’t assume that you have all the strength and ability to do it all. When things get beyond your capabilities, seek support from other family members or friends.

4. Self-care is important. When caregivers become so consumed in their roles, they struggle to spend time and effort on their health and well-being. They end up working beyond their limits and consequently face the health implications.

* If you become incapacitated, no one will be there to continue the caregiving. Make your health an utmost priority.

5. Secure the needed financial support. Taking care of the elderly can be very cost-intensive. The cost of their nutritional supplements, drugs, and other necessities can sometimes be overwhelming. Creating an effort to attain financial support from friends and family members may be necessary.

As our parents age, we know their energies and abilities will diminish. Our responsibility is to provide them with the best support service to enable them to enjoy the moments of old age. It is possible to care for them as they age, but if their needs become too great, don’t hesitate to ask for help outside of the home.

The Best Ways to Help an Elderly Loved One with Alzheimer’s or Dementia

The World Health Organization statistics show that over 55 million people have dementia across the globe, with about 10 million new reported cases yearly.

It also mentions that dementia results from disorders and damages that directly or indirectly affect the brain. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia and may contribute to 60-70% of cases.
What is Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s is a development of mental damage that can arise in our middle or senior age because of a generalized corruption of the brain.

The cause of this disease is the unusual build-up of proteins in and around brain cells. They leave residues that form plaques and knots within and around the brain cells.
What Causes It?

Scientists explain that as the brain cells get affected, it reduces chemical messengers accountable for sending signals between brain cells.

With time, different brain regions become smaller, but the memory part of the brain is the first to be affected.

All these factors show how people with the disease may feel frustrated as they live each day of their lives with memory loss. They need extra care and attention to help live a comfortable life despite their situation.

Best Ways To Help

People with Alzheimer’s usually get discouraged as simple chores become difficult. But there are various ways to help them feel relaxed and comfortable as they live their daily life.

Let’s consider a few of these ways:

1. Educate yourself. Learn about the causes and effects of the disease, and find practical ways to make life manageable for them. Understanding how the disease affects them will make it easier for you to live with and care for them. There are many resources online you may find helpful.

2. Be patient with them. Alzheimer’s makes it hard to do simple daily activities and remember basic information. It is vital to be patient with your loved ones when they struggle to remember some things.

3. Help them connect. People with Alzheimer’s can find it hard to communicate their opinions and emotions as their disease progresses, but you can help make it easier for them to do that by listening to them and giving them room to speak if they want to.

Additional things you can try:

* Call them by their name and while looking in their eyes.

* When you talk to them, gently touch or hold their hands.

* Ask questions that require straightforward answers. Be specific with your questions, so they can find it easy to respond.

* Let them make choices. Because deciding can be challenging for people with Alzheimer’s, allow them to make simple decisions themselves. They can choose their clothes, what food they may want, or a movie they would like to watch.

* Let them choose their clothing by giving them two options and asking them to choose one.

* You could ask them what food they would like to eat and give them options to make it easy.

* Make them feel useful at home. Everyone likes to feel useful, especially if they have limitations. So asking your loved ones to do simple chores will make them feel needed and good about themselves and feel valued. They would appreciate it if you asked them to help.

* You can also keep their career in mind when asking them to do certain things. Someone who used to be a teacher may like to listen to the kids read.

Remember, our loved ones can still live a fulfilling life, no matter how hard it can be. They deserve to live life and enjoy it, and you can help them by loving them and treating them with dignity and kindness.
