Four Ways To Stay Safe In The Sun

There are few feelings more satisfying than feeling the sun on your skin - especially after a long, cold, and dark winter.

While the sun offers plenty of health benefits - including the Vitamin D so many of us tend to be missing - it is also important that we learn how to stay safe.

Too much exposure to the sun puts us at increased risk of burns and discomfort and, in the long term, can lead to an increased risk of skin cancer.

By taking the time to implement a few protective measures, we can enjoy the warmth of the sun while still staying safe and protected from long term risks and damage.

Apply The Right Sunscreen, And Apply It Correctly

According to experts, we should all be wearing a minimum of SPF 15 when we are outside, and this rises to SPF 30 when you are going to be outdoors for a long time.

As a rule, the blonder your hair and the fairer your skin, the higher level SPF you should use. Freckled redheads know all too well that using an SPF 20 on a hot sunny day is less than ideal.

You also need to ensure you are applying sunscreen properly. It needs to be reapplied after you have been in the water, and don’t forget areas such as the back of your neck or your feet.

Stay Hydrated

The sun increases our body temperature, which is great for sunbathing. It also means, however, that we tend to sweat a lot more, so you need to ensure that you are topping up your hydration levels regularly.

Carry water with you and take regular sips. This is particularly important if you are exercising in the sun.

Avoid alcohol if you are going to be spending long periods in the sun - it will dehydrate you more quickly and can increase your risk of sunstroke or illness.

Protect Your Eyes

Your body is not the only thing you need to protect from the sun - your eyes need shading too.

Invest in a quality pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from the potentially harmful UVA and UVB rays, and never look directly at the sun - this can cause serious long-term damage.

Avoid cheap fashion sunglasses. These usually lack the protective filter required to shield your eyes from the strength of the sun.

Avoid The Hottest Times

The hottest times of the day are between 11am and 3pm - this is when the sun is at its strongest. It is a good idea to stay out of the direct sun during this time, as you may find yourself overheating or dehydrating more quickly.

Getting out and enjoying the sunshine is important for both mental and physical health.

Just make sure you are taking those few extra steps to allow you and your family to enjoy the sun safely.
