Understanding Your Metabolism
Throughout the course of the day your body is constantly burning calories. Simple activities like standing, walking, typing or even just breathing require energy. Your body gets this energy by burning calories. The number of calories that your body burns while you’re just laying around doing nothing is called your basal metabolic rate.
When people talk about speeding up your metabolism this is what they are referring to. The higher your basal metabolic rate, the more calories you burn all the time -- regardless of what you are doing. As a result, having a faster metabolism makes it easier to lose weight.
Choosing the Right Exercises
Part of developing a quick weight loss plan involves finding ways to speed up your metabolism. One of the best ways to do this is by increasing your overall muscle mass. This is most easily accomplished through strength training. Try lifting weights several times a week to build muscle and rev up your metabolism.
On alternating days, incorporate cardiovascular workouts such as running, biking or fast walking into your routine.
Choosing the Right Foods
When it comes to food, your best option is to choose foods that have a low calorie count, but a high nutritional value. This allows your body to get the nutrients that it needs without consuming more calories than you naturally burn.
Try eating foods like kale, eggs, oatmeal, grapefruit, broccoli and lean meat. Also, make sure you are drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated helps keep your metabolism running at full speed.
Some foods actually help increase your metabolism. For instance, hot peppers contain a chemical called capsaicin.
When consumed, this chemical causes the body to release a hormone that speeds up the metabolism. If you like spicy foods, try adding cayenne peppers or other hot peppers to your meal plan for a metabolism boost.
Eating at the Right Times
When you eat is almost as important as what you eat. Be sure to start your day with a healthy breakfast. This sets the stage for you to have plenty of energy so you can burn calories all day long.
Instead of eating three large meals, try eating five or six smaller meals. By spreading your food out throughout the day, it helps keep your metabolism running at top speed.
