Let’s face it, most of us live a less than healthy lifestyle. Although we have good intentions, many of us fall short when it comes to exercising regularly, eating right, and getting enough rest.
How many times have you decided that first thing in the morning you would start a new routine – a healthy one? This would of course, include exercising. But on the very first day of your new lifestyle you decided that you really did not want to exercise. So with that major part of the new lifestyle already compromised you decided that now was not the time to start the healthy routine after all – perhaps next week, or next month.
It is agreed that exercise, just like eating right, should be a part of our daily, healthy routines. But just because we drop the ball in one aspect does not mean that we should give up all together. If on that first day of a healthier lifestyle you opt to skip exercise or eat junk food, that’s okay. You really can ease into the healthy routines without stressing over every little detail.
Start with whatever is easier for you. For some of us it is the exercise that is enjoyable. But for others, it may be the concept of working on getting enough sleep and then a focus on eating right – adding the exercise component in later.
Eating right means eating healthy food choices in the right amounts, at the right times. This will help keep our metabolism rate high, while our body is receiving the nutrients needed to keep it healthy. This helps us to feel more energetic – which of course, can have an impact on how we feel about exercising.
Without enough sleep we tend to feel sluggish and often fatigue sets in. This can have an influence on our eating habits because if we are feeling tired we are less likely to take the time and trouble to shop and prepare healthy meal choices. In fact, we are more likely to opt for something that is quick and easy – like a fast food burger.
Additionally, when we are tired we do not want to think about exercise.
As you can see, our sleeping habits, eating habits, and physical activity are all interrelated. When we tend to one need we are going to see an impact on the others. That is why it is perfectly fine to start a healthier lifestyle routine by focusing on only one of these areas. After you have adjusted to that change you can easily add another or both of the other areas.
Begin slowly with any new changes. Find ways to fit them into your lifestyle without having to make a total change all at one time. An example of this is using a healthy cereal as a breakfast choice. These foods are quick and easy to prepare and they are inexpensive. An option for other meals includes some of the healthier frozen meals that are now available. You still have the convenience of fast food, but in a healthy way.
When it comes to exercise – start slowly. You might begin by giving up the remote and walking across the room to control the TV and stereo components. Most find that by incorporating easy exercise into their life, adding more is not difficult. And physical activity will often help with any sleep problems.
