The hormonal changes associated with menopause affect all organs of the body including the skin. It is common for menopausal women to experience dry and itchy skin.
These problems may be accompanied by rashes and irritation. There are a number of things that you can do to reduce the itching and to make your skin soft, smooth and radiant again.
Moisturize your skin to stimulate the optimal functioning of the epidermis cells. Mineral oils are highly effective for relieving menopause skin itching and for giving your skin the softness and smoothness you want.
Vitamin E oil is another effective option. It works to moisturize and to nurture the skin while providing protection from harmful elements such as UV light.
Irrespective of the type of moisturizer you use, you must apply it after taking a shower or a bath while your skin is still damp. That way, you will virtually seal the moisture inside the epidermis. Do not forget to drink plenty of water to hydrate your skin.
Use gentle natural soap and avoid showering with hot water to prevent menopause skin itchiness and dryness from becoming worse. Baby soap with natural ingredients may be the best option. It will certainly have a soothing effect on the skin while providing gentle cleanings.
Hot water can make the itching, dryness and irritation more severe. That is why you may want to take showers with slightly warm water until the menopause skin symptoms are relieved. You can readily set the thermostat to higher degrees in the bathroom if you are worried about feeling cold.
Apply sunscreen every time you go out. By protecting your skin from UV light, you will get rid of the menopause skin problems more quickly.
When your skin is effectively protected, it will ensure its natural mechanisms to return to normal. Besides, UV light protection is essential for fighting the effects of aging. It is best to use sunscreen with SPF higher than 30.
Eat a balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins from the B group. These nutrients are essential for keeping the skin hydrated and nurtured.
They will help to give permanent relief from the common menopause skin problems. Fatty fish, sardines, walnuts, flaxseed and soy are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
The latter two are highly recommended because they contain phytoestrogens which help alleviate other common menopause symptoms such as hot flashes.
Vitamins from the B group can be found in all sorts of foods from chicken and eggs to legumes and leafy greens so it is essential for you to include foods from all groups in your diet.
