Some helpful tips for managing symptoms of bipolar disorder are:
● Sticking to a schedule.
A set daily schedule has been shown to help people with bipolar disorder better control their moods.
● Try to maintain a sleep schedule.
Going to bed at the same time and getting up at the same time each day is another way to help maintain a schedule and help with sleep-related problems.
● Pay attention to sleep problems.
Sleeping issues whether sleeping too much or too little are typical symptoms of bipolar disorder. When these insomnia or hypersomnia symptoms flare up it could be an indication that you need to speak with your doctor or therapist.
● Get exercise.
Exercise is known to help with sleeping issues, and it can also make a person feel better. It’s well-documented that exercise can also help alleviate some symptoms of depression.
● Manage stress when possible.
Stress can make symptoms of bipolar more severe so limiting stressors in life can help alleviate some symptoms. Things like prayer, meditation, and other relaxation techniques can help.
Taking time to intentionally not work is another good way to tone down stress, as well as spending time doing hobbies or activities that are enjoyable.
● Cut back on caffeine.
Caffeine can affect sleep so limiting caffeine intake can help with sleep problems.
● Try to avoid drugs and alcohol.
Medication for bipolar disorder can be negatively affected by drugs and alcohol. They can also worsen symptoms such as impulsivity or depression.
● Eat a healthy diet.
A healthy diet of foods that make you feel good can help with moods. There’s no specific bipolar diet, but talking to a nutritionist can help.
For instance, sugar can cause mood swings and a “crash” once the sugar leaves the system.
That doesn’t mean people with bipolar should avoid all sugar and carbohydrates, but it does mean limiting it may be helpful.
