We all hate it but very few of us know enough about how to combat it. The culprit I’m talking about is Cellulite.
Cellulite is essentially a mass of fat trapped under the tissues which causes the skin over it to appear patchy or dimply. The most cellulite prone areas of the body are arms, thighs, and the Gluteus Maximus. Cellulite starts to gather in the body much before one is aware of it. This usually starts around puberty and accompanying factors like hormones, genes, thickness of the skin and diet, aid its development. It has been noticed that this phenomenon is more common among women than men – which seems to be unfair.
It is important to know that Cellulite is not a disease and neither is it completely curable. So, all those promises about the miraculous cellulite disappearing creams are not completely credible. Also, exorbitant salon treatments can only make it fade away temporarily. Many people also think that, treatments like Liposuction can cure Cellulite. This is not totally true because Liposuction is intended to remove fat. Thus, its effect on the surface layer of the skin is minimal.
One of the most effective means of reducing Cellulite is incorporating a regular exercise regime. Moreover, it is important to focus on the cellulite affected areas. For instance, if there is excess Cellulite on the thighs it helps to focus on the thighs regularly. It is also advised to reduce the calorie intake in one's diet. This would mean that the fruit and the vegetable intake in the diet need to be increased. Essentially, the protein content in the food has to be much higher than the fat content.
There are some parts of our body that tend to hold more water than other parts. So, when the body is over hydrated these body parts retain the excess water causing the skin to swell up. It is advisable to reduce the sodium content and drink as much water as possible to flush out the toxins. Sodium causes the body to retain water.
A diet comprised of antioxidants assists in reducing cellulite. This would mean that one has to keep the intake of some fluids and other toxins to a bare minimum. This would include tea, coffee, trans-fat, saturated fat, and cigarettes. These trigger the release of free radicals, which contribute to the build up of Cellulite. Green tea however, has a good quantity of antioxidants and is therefore good for the body.
It does help to include food items that assist in reducing Cellulite. This would include steamed or raw vegetables. Berries are a great source of antioxidants and are highly recommended. Cellulite is often known as “orange peel,” referring to the rippled surface of the skin of the fruit. However, oranges have great skin tightening properties and aid in the reduction of Cellulite. So does Soya, Tomatoes, and Papayas.
The idea is to eat food that is healthy and that add to the fibre and protein content of the body. Reducing cellulite is not something that happens overnight. It can be minimized and/or managed however through healthy eating and exercise.
