Cyclothymic disorder is similar to both bipolar I and bipolar II disorder, but the symptoms are not as severe.
A person who is diagnosed with cyclothymic disorder will have periods of hypomanic and depressive symptoms, but they won’t meet the full criteria of either hypomanic or major depressive episodes.
Cyclothymic disorder still impairs a person’s life and it affects how they function in social or occupational areas.
Someone with cyclothymic disorder will have these symptoms at least half of the time, and they must experience them for at least two years to meet the criteria for diagnosis in the DSM-5 (1 year if they’re an adolescent).
Signs and Symptoms of Substance/Medication-Induced Bipolar and Related Disorder
As you may have guessed by the name of this disorder, this diagnosis occurs when someone is experiencing bipolar symptoms under the presence of medication or a substance.
Someone who is diagnosed with substance-induced bipolar will have mood disturbances that are either manic, depressive, or both.
Signs and Symptoms of Bipolar and Related Disorder Due to Another Medical Condition
This diagnosis is for someone who has the signs of bipolar disorder, but under examination, there is a clear sign that the bipolar symptoms are being caused by a separate medical condition.
Some medical conditions that have caused mood disorders include:
● Huntington’s disease
● Alzheimer’s disease
● Heart attacks
● Thyroid problems
● Cancer
Signs and Symptoms of Other Specified Bipolar and Related Disorder
This diagnosis may be given when a clinician sees symptoms of bipolar disorder, but the person does not meet the full criteria for any of the other bipolar diagnoses.
A therapist or doctor may use this diagnosis if the hypomanic or major depressive episodes occur, but for a shorter period of time (such as 2-3 days instead of a week at a time).
A therapist may also use this diagnosis if the person they’re treating has had hypomanic episodes, but hasn’t experienced a major depressive episode.
This diagnosis could be used if the person is experiencing symptoms of depressive and hypomanic episodes that don’t meet the criteria for either, and the symptoms don’t last for a full two years.
Unspecified Bipolar and Related Disorder
This diagnosis may be used when the clinician doesn’t have enough information for a full bipolar diagnosis, or when they choose not to specify why the person does not meet the criteria for other types of bipolar.
