Additional Facts About Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar is a complicated disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. Here are some additional quick facts about bipolar so you can better understand this disorder.

● Bipolar disorder is not rare. 2.8% of adults in the United States have bipolar disorder.

● The highs and lows of bipolar disorder are not predictable.

● Children of any age may have symptoms of bipolar disorder. Bipolar in adolescents may look different than it does in adults, but children can also experience extreme mood swings that include mania or depression.

● People who have bipolar disorder can have jobs. Having a bipolar disorder diagnosis does not mean a person can’t be a functioning part of society. Up to 60% of people with bipolar disorder are employed and people who have proper treatment and good support have a better chance of maintaining employment.

● Bipolar isn’t constant. People who experience deep depression or high episodes of mania can also experience times when they’re more regulated. This period can last for months or years at a time.

● Some people have mania and depression at the same time. Earlier in this eBook there was a quote of a woman talking about having “mixed episodes.” This is when a person experiences symptoms of both depression and mania or hypomania at the same time.

These symptoms can occur in rapid sequence or they can happen simultaneously. During mixed episodes, a person may feel like they want to clean the entire house while also having feelings of fear and dread.

● Diagnosing bipolar correctly can be difficult. Diagnosing mental health disorders is challenging because there are often symptoms that overlap with other potential diagnoses. People who are initially diagnosed with general anxiety or depression may actually have bipolar disorder, and it may take time to receive a correct diagnosis.

○ Sometimes people are also incorrectly diagnosed with bipolar. They may have a different disorder like borderline personality disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder. These disorders can mimic symptoms of bipolar disorder but have a different root cause.

How to Treat Bipolar Disorder

Treatment is available for people with bipolar disorder and in many cases, treatments can drastically improve the quality of their life.

The most common treatments for bipolar
disorder include:

● Medication
● Therapy
● Changes in lifestyle
Medication for Bipolar Disorder

There are many different medications available for bipolar, and what works for one person may not be effective for another. A person with bipolar I disorder may need something different than someone with bipolar II, for example.

The most common types of medication used for bipolar are:

● Mood stabilizers. Mood stabilizers are prescribed to someone with bipolar to help regulate their emotions. Rather than only prescribing anti-depressants to someone with depression, a mood stabilizer may be a better option. Anti-depressants alone can help with depression but may cause a person with bipolar to begin having manic symptoms.

Examples of mood stabilizers are:
○ Lithium
○ Divalproex
○ Carbamazepine
○ Lamotrigine

● Anti-depressants. Along with a mood stabilizer, someone who has difficult bouts of depression may also be prescribed an anti-depressant.

● Antipsychotics. Antipsychotics may be prescribed to help people with bipolar who are having delusions, hallucinations, or other severe mania symptoms. Some antipsychotics can also be used as a standalone mood stabilizer.

● Anti-anxiety medications. People with bipolar disorder may be temporarily prescribed anti-anxiety medications to help with sleeping issues.
