What are Eye Problems and Defective vision?
A health article about Eye Problems and Defective vision from Your Health Online the A to Z directory of dealing with Health Problems & nutritional Self Care Strategies
Defective vision is a common problem nowadays.
The main reasons for eye defects are reading
in bad light (either too dim or excessively bright ), excessive reading, reading in moving
trains, buses or cars, watching too much television, seeing too many films, and eating artificial
food.
The popular belief that the use of spectacles can rectify all cases of defective vision is
based on the assumption that such defects are caused by permanent changes in the eyes.
This
assumption is not correct as defective vision results from functional derangements which can be
rectified by simple natural methods of treatment.
Persons who are prescribed glasses are told that they should avoid taking them off because of
the danger of eye strain and that they should always look straight through the centre of the lens.
So, when looking in other directions they do not move their eye balls and eye muscles as is
natural, but instead move head up and down or sideways.
Thus, constant use of glasses throws
the whole natural process of vision out of gear and causes ‘parking’ of the eyes. Gradually, the
muscles of the eyes degenerate through non-use.
Moreover, the use of glasses results in a
reduction of blinking which is a movement intended to assist and preserve eye sight. Wearing
glasses for many years results in stiff, dull-looking eyes without any sparkle.
Signs & Symptoms of Defective Vision
The three chief causes of defective vision are mental strain, wrong diet and improper blood and
nerve supply.
Mental strain : Dr. W.H. Bates, the founder of revolutionary methods of eye treatment,
considers mental strain to be the cause of all defects of vision, which puts corresponding
physical strain on the eyes, their muscles and nerves. In his opinion the lesser defects
are mainly due to mental strain owing to over work, fear, anxiety, etc.
In pursuance of this
theory, Dr. Bates has concentrated his efforts on methods of treatment which will remove
the condition of mental strain.
Wrong Feeding : The eye is a part of the body and as such must share in any condition
affecting the system. Most of the diseases affecting the eyes are symptoms of a general
toxemic condition of the body due mainly to excessive starch, sugar and protein ingestion.
The muscles and blood vessels surrounding the eyes share in the clogging process
taking place over the body due to improper metabolism caused by an imbalanced and
too-concentrated diet.
Improper blood and nerve supply : The eyes need to be properly supplied with blood
and nerve force for proper vision. Any factor capable of interfering either with the blood
vessels or with the nerves of the eyes could cause defective vision.
The muscles covering
the upper portion of the spine at the back of the neck are the main seat of the mechanical
interference with the blood and nerve supply to the eyes.
Best Tips on on getting beautiful eyes
Like the skin and hair, the eyes tell a great deal about the state of your health, your habits and lifestyle. Illness, nutritional deficiencies, lack of sleep, anxiety and stress can all be reflected by eyes that are dull, tired and strained.
Eye care has increased in importance and relevance in modem times. Progress has certainly taken its toll. Never before have we put the eyes to as much strain as we do now, has focusing on television and computer screened, on intense reading or pouring over figures.
During the ancient times, the eyes were used in occupations that actually exercised them and kept them healthy. The farmer, hunter, fisherman, used a variety of natural eye movements, focusing on distant-objects.
We hardly exercise the muscles of the eyes. And, this kind of eye strain begins at an early age. With immobility, the eye muscles are tired and tense. With time, they get distorted and cramped. Unless we consciously exercise them and help them to relax, they cannot perform well, stay healthy, or look beautiful.
Take a few minutes off from close eye-work to exercise your eyes.
• Cup your palms over closed eyes, without touching them. Look into the blackness. This can be very restful. Sit in a relaxed position. Move your eyes in a wide circular motion, first in one direction and then the other. Move the eyes to the right and left and then up and down.
• Hold your forefinger in front of your face. Keep looking at it and move your finger further away from you. Then look past the finger as far as you can see and then back to your finger. Slowly bring your finger back. Repeat this 3 or 4 times.
• Whenever you are out of doors, consciously look at the trees and plants. The green colour is soothing to the eyes. No wonder, nature has been so generous with green.
Eyes Causes of Defective Vision
Mental strain, wrong food habits and improper blood and nerve supply
The three chief causes of myopia are mental strain, wrong food habits, and improper blood and nerve supply. Mental strain puts a corresponding physical strain on the eyes, and their muscles and nerves.
Reading in dim light or too glaring a light
Other causes of this eye disorder are reading in dim light or in too glaring a light; reading in moving trains, buses or cars; watching too much television and films; and excessive reading.
Defective Vision treatment using Vitamin A
The intake of vitamin A is of utmost importance for improving vision. The best sources of this vitamin are raw spinach, turnip tops, milk cream, cheese, butter, tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, cabbage, soya beans, green peas, fresh milk, oranges, and dates. If taken as a supplement, 25,000 IU of vitamin A are recommended daily.
Defective Vision treatment using Triphala
Triphala, the famous Ayurvedic preparation, is considered beneficial in the treatment of myopia. This preparation consists of three myrobalans, namely, embelica myrobalan (amla), chebulic myrobalan (harad), and belleric myroblan (bahera).
A decoction of this preparation should be made by mixing thirty grams of Triphala in half a litre of water and should be taken by mouth and also used for washing the eyes twice a day. This will bring good results if continued for some months.
Defective Vision treatment using Liquorice
Another effective remedy for myopia is liquorice. Half a teaspoon of powder of the root, mixed with an equal quantity of honey and half the quantity of ghee, should be given twice daily with a cup of milk on an empty stomach for the treatment of this condition.
Defective Vision treatment using Chicory
The herb chicory or endive is extremely valuable in defective vision due to myopia. It contains food elements which are constantly needed by the optic system. It is one of the richest sources of vitamin A which is very useful for the eyes.
The addition of juices of carrot, celery, and parsley to chicory juice makes it a highly nourishing food for the optic nerve and the muscular system. It can bring amazing results in correcting eye defects.
Half a litre to one litre of this combination, taken daily, has frequently corrected eye troubles in the course of a few months to the extent that normal vision was regained, making the wearing of spectacles unnecessary.
The formula proportions considered useful in this combination are 200 ml of carrot juice, 150 ml of celery juice, 75 ml of endive juice and 75 ml of parsley juice to make half a litre of this combination.
Testing and fitting Contact Lenses
Before you can get a pair of contact lenses, you’ll need to have your eyes examined and fitted by an optometrist and get your prescription. Normally, fittings for contact lenses will take longer than the standard eye exam.
If you are looking to get fitted for contacts, you should let your optometrist know up front that you are interested in getting contacts. When you first begin with your eye exam, your optometrist will first examine the health of your eyes.
Your eye doctor will also want to know why you want contacts, if you have any known problems with your eyes, and what you hope to get from your visit. Overall, your contact fitting and exam will be based on the information that you have provided.

Eye problems and injuries in Adolescents
Every year more than one million people get eye injuries, out of which ninety percent are preventable if safety eyewear is used. One hundred and twenty five thousand eye injury cases are caused by household products.
It is a good habit to wash hands regularly, especially after handling household chemicals. When using detergents and hazardous solvents, the handler must wear chemical safety goggles. Also, no children must be around while handling chemicals. While spraying, the nozzle must be turned away from the face.
Fertilizers, pesticides and paints must be stored away from reach. While doing household activities proper protective gears such as goggles, gloves, boots and helmet should be worn, if required. The house must be illuminated adequately to avoid accidents in the dark. Stairs should also be illuminated and the rails must also be installed.
The instructions for opening the tops of bottles must be read carefully to avoid them from popping and injuring other people. Children and adolescents should read instructions before handling operating equipment before playing games. All power equipment must be installed with guards. While playing outside, the eyes must be protected by UV protective goggles and it is a bad idea to look at the sun directly.
Precautions should not only be taken indoors, but outdoors too. This is because; more than forty thousand people get eye injuries outdoors. Ninety nine percent of the injuries are caused while playing sports.
So it is necessary for the youngsters to wear protective eyewear while playing sports or when involved in outdoor recreational activities. A special helmet is designed with wire shield or polycarbonate face mask which is not only safe, but comfortable, too.
Protective eyewear should also be worn while performing experiments in science lab. Fireworks must only be handled by adults.
Because of increasing use of computers, more and more youngsters are getting eye strains. The symptoms of eye strain caused by computer are red & watery eyes, focusing problems, aching & tired eyelids, eye muscle spasm, backache and headache.
In such an environment, eye exercise must be done regularly. The eyes must be made to focus on distant objects and should be rotated from side to side. It is extremely important to give ample rest to the eyes.
Glasses with UV shield must be worn when looking at the computer screen. Eye strain can be avoided by increasing the distance from the monitor.
Eye hazards are also caused when cosmetics are used improperly by contact lens wearers. Some of the adverse reactions are injury, eye irritation, allergy, dryness, infection, and lens deposition. That is the reason why adolescents must be made aware of the risk they will face when opting for contact lens.
Girls should understand that they should buy hypoallergenic cosmetics and especially the non-scented variety, manufactured by big brand names. Cosmetics should not be shared with anything else. The applicator brushes must be washed regularly and old mascara must be disposed and not refilled.
Eye shadows which are glittery, pearlized, frosted or iridescent contain ground tinsel or oyster shell, which should be always avoided. Eyeliner should not be applied in the inner lid edge. Loose powder should be avoided.
Cream should not be applied near the
eyes. The wearer should wash hands while handling contact lens. No crying, washing of face or bathing should be done with the contact lens on.
Eyes - Macular Degeneration
Over 25 percent of Americans over 65 have macular degeneration. It can lead to blindness and affects more Americans than glaucoma and cataracts combined. And, as you grow older, your risk increases dramatically.
Fortunately, there’s plenty you can do to prevent it from happening to you. Today you’ll read about a few simple steps you can take to avoid it.
Age-related macular degeneration occurs when the macula, an area at the back of the retina, begins to break down. Two new studies show that age-related macular degeneration can be prevented through a diet containing the right amount of a few simple nutrients.
Researchers at the Archives of Ophthalmology evaluated 4,519 people aged 60 to 80 between 1992 and 1998 who took part in a trial sponsored by the National Institutes of Health’s National Eye Institute.1
First, they checked patients for signs of macular degeneration. If they had it, the researchers looked at how far it had progressed. Patients also completed a food questionnaire to find out how much of certain vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients such as fatty acids they were getting.
Of the total, 1,115 patients had no symptoms of disease at the outset, while 658 people had a severe form of the disease. When their diets were evaluated, the researchers found that people who ate more fish — more than two medium servings per week or more than one serving of broiled or baked fish — were least likely to have the disease.
A second team of researchers analyzed data from 7,752 people taking part in a large national study between 1988 and 1994. Eleven percent of the patients had AMD.
The researchers found that vitamin D was associated with reduced risk of early AMD, but not advanced AMD.
When participants were split into five groups based on level of vitamin D in the blood, those in the highest group had a 40 percent lower risk of early AMD than those in the lowest group.
They suggested vitamin D may cut the risk of early age-related macular degeneration by reducing inflammation or preventing blood vessel growth in the retina.
While these new studies are helpful, they don’t tell the whole story. There are a number of other essential nutrients that can also prevent macular degeneration and improve your eyesight.
• Lutein and Zeaxanthin: These carotenoids go hand in hand to prevent and treat AMD. They are the most potent combination of carotenoids we know of. They’re naturally present in the retina, and highly concentrated in the macula.
• Vitamin E: Look for it as “mixed tocopherols.” This is a vital vision protector.
People with higher concentrations of these two carotenoids in the retina tend not to develop AMD. They increase the density of macular pigment. The higher the density, the more protection your eyes have.
Protecting eyes from sunburn:
Most of us these days have had the message hammered home about protecting our skin from the sun. But what about sun damage to our eyes?
If you have spent any time at all outside in bright glaring sunlight you will recall the feeling of gritty irritable eyes afterwards. Is this discomfort temporary or can your eyes be damaged permanently by the sun?
Why do eye experts recommend good quality sunglasses? And what does good quality mean? Some people think it's all about glare and how best to see in bright conditions on the beach and snowfields, but that's not the true danger. The nasty damage comes from invisible ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
UV rays are dangerous because they are high energy radiation and are present in even the weakest sunlight. Although you can't see UV rays you can see and feel the damage. Anyone who has ever been sunburned knows how much pain UV rays can cause!
Sun burn and skin cancers are due to a dangerous shorter wavelength ultraviolet radiation known as UV-B, while skin dryness and ageing changes are due to the longer wavelength UV-A. What sort of eye damage can you get from UV exposure? It's usually classified by location and is broadly split into two groups... damage to the front of the eye comes from both UV-A and UV-B while only the deeper penetrating UV-A can affect the back of the eye.
Scientific experts agree that long term exposure to deep penetrating UV-A is one of the main contributing factors in age related retinal eye damage such as macular degeneration. The retina is the sensitive vision layer at the back of the eye. Age related macular degeneration is a progressive deterioration of the central part of this layer and is regarded as one of America's leading cause of vision loss over the age of 65.
UV damage to the front part of the eye is more common and much more visible. The conjunctiva or outer protection layer of the eye is the most exposed to sun damage and just like your skin, it dries up and hardens.
A growth called a pterygium can occur where the conjunctival tissue gradually thickens and grows onto the cornea (the clear window at the front of the eye) threatening vision. A pterygium can be surgically removed but repeat exposure to further UV can cause rapid regrowth and this is a serious problem.
Another UV induced vision problem is cataract. Cataracts are a cloudiness of the lens inside the eye and cause significant vision impairment. In worldwide areas of intense UV such as the tropics, cataracts occur decades earlier than in lower UV regions. Once cataract affects vision the only solution is surgical removal so prevention is the best protection.
It's pretty clear that an important factor in good sunglass design is blocking UV. Sunglasses able to block 100% of both UV-A and UV-B wavelengths are the clearly the best way to avoid long term UV eye damage.
Broad brimmed hats may seem like another good solution but reflected sunlight off surfaces such as water, sand and snow easily gets under such a guard. Combine UV blocking sunglasses and the hat however and you have the best protection of all!
Among the most vulnerable group for UV eye damage are our children. They usually spend more time outside than many adults and few of them wear sunglasses. Even young children need good UV blocking sunglasses.
The campaign to educate parents and children to cover up against skin cancer has been very successful... Now we just need to teach them to "cover up" against UV eye damage!
Eyestrain
Eyestrain can occur in those who overuse their eyes, or can be caused by other factors such as tension or anxiety.
Eyestrain is characterized by headaches, blurry vision or difficulty focusing. If you have mild eyestrain every so often it is not a cause for alarm.
Some herbal remedies can be helpful.
• Eyebright – This herb helps reduce watery eyes as it has both anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. It also helps relieve eye irritation. Most often taken as a tea, drink 1 to 3 cups per day. It can also be used as a compress. Steep the dried herbs in hot water for 10 minutes. Strain and cool the liquid, then soak a clean towel and apply to closed eyes.
• Bilberry – This shrub produces berries that are used to treat vision problems. It helps strengthen the capillaries of the eyes. Taken in capsule form, take 2 to 3 capsules per day. The closely related cranberry, blueberry and huckleberry are also good for treating eye problems.
• Goldenseal – Use goldenseal as a compress on the eyes. It contains berberine, which is known to help constrict the blood vessels, helping to get rid of bloodshot eyes.
bloodshot eyes:
As the name suggests bloodshot eyes makes your eyes blood colored. The blood vessels in the white portion of the eyes are enlarged and irritated causing the redness.
Some common reasons for the redness of the eyes are due to coughing, eyestrain, dry air, over exposure to sun, dust, foreign body, an allergic reaction, infection, trauma, fatigue, alcohol consumption, lack of vitamin B2 and B6 and high blood pressure.
You can get bloodshot eyes by:
Blepharitis - Caused by skin bacteria that leads to itching and turns your eyelid greasy and crusty.
Conjunctivitis - Also known as pink eye is caused by a virus, bacteria and allergy or skin irritation. It is very contagious if caused by an organism.
Corneal ulcers - It is caused by viral infection affecting the outer cover of the eye.
Uveitis - It causes inflammation of uvea, including iris, ciliary body and choroids. It is related to autoimmune disorder, infection or exposure to toxins.
Home Remedies for Bloodshot Eyes
Reduce the redness by splashing cold water over closed eyes. This soothes the eye and shrinks the blood vessels as in case of an allergic reaction.
You can apply cold compress to your eyes by using an ice pack wrapped in a towel.
Use warm compress for red eyes without any itching. This may be due to fatigue or tiredness
Put three drops of rose water in your eyes.
Soak cotton pad in a mixture of rose water, milk and Aloe Vera juice. Place these cotton pads over your closed eyes for 10-20 minutes in a dimly lit room. This will help in reducing the redness.
You can try the hot and cold compress on your eyes, alternately.
Stay away from allergy triggering agents which may lead to bloodshot eyes.
Goldenseal is a native medicinal plant that contains berberine which compresses blood vessels and helps in reducing the bloodshot effect. You can use it as a compress or wash to get rid of the pain.
To get relief from bloodshot eyes have two ripe tomatoes first thing in the morning on empty stomach. The vitamin C and flavonoids in the tomatoes makes the blood vessel walls stronger.
You can also use non-preservative artificial tears, this helps in soothing your eyes and clearing the redness.
Wear genuine preservative-free contact lenses. The ones with preservatives can cause redness and other related infections.

Cataract
Cataract is among the most common eye diseases. The term actually means a waterfall, and
refers to the opacity of the crystalline lens of the eye on the assumption that the condition is
caused by the humour of the brain falling over the pupil.
The crystalline lens, through which light travels into the interior of the eye, is situated just behind
the iris, or coloured portion of the eye. In cataract, this lens becomes opaque, hence seriously
hampering the entrance of light into the eye. Blindness ensues when no light rays can permeate
the opacity of the lens.
According to the modern medical system, a surgical operation to remove
the lens or a major portion of it is the only way to get rid of the disease. The patient is provided
with suitable glasses after the operation to enable him to see well enough to carry on his normal
duties.

Pinkeye / Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis refers to the inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin transparent membrane
covering the front of the eye. It is also known as " sore eyes" and is a very common form of eye
trouble.
It spreads from person to person through direct contract. Overcrowding, dirtysurroundings and unhealthy living conditions can cause epidemics of this ailment. The eyeball and under side of the eyelids become inflamed. At first, the eyes are red, dry and burning. Later, there may be a watery secretion.
In more serious cases, there is pus formation. During sleep, this material dries, making the eye-lashes stick together. Redness, irritation and watering of the eyes are symptoms common to all forms of conjunctivitis. Itch and the closing of the throat is variable.
Acute allergic conjunctivitis is typically itchy. Sometimes distressingly so, and the patient often complains of some lid swelling. Chronic allergy often causes just itch or irritation, and often much frustration because the absence of redness or discharge can lead to accusations of hypochondria.
Also known as conjunctivitis, pinkeye is a highly contagious inflammation of the eyelid membrane, and causes the white of the eye to appear pink. Pinkeye usually clears up within several days.
Sties are small pimples or blocked hair follicles on the eyelid, and can be painful. They open and go away in several days. There are some herbal remedies that can be effective in the treatment of both eye conditions.
• Eyebright – This herb is effective in helping soothe many eye problems. It has anti-bacterial properties, and should be used as eyewash or in a compress. Soak a clean cloth in the warm liquid and hold on closed eyes.
• Green Tea – This helps aid in the reduction of inflammation and fights infections. Use as a compress. Steep the tea for 10 minutes in hot water, and soak a clean towel with the liquid and place on closed eyes. Hold on the eyes for at least 10 minutes.
• Herbal Eyewash – Make eyewash using a mixture of herbs. Steep the herbs in piping hot water for ten minutes. Strain the herbs, leaving the warm liquid. Soak a clean washcloth in the liquid, ring out the excess and place on your closed eyes for 10 minutes.

Eye Stye Treatment
What is a eye stye?
The term stye refers to small painful boil, an inflamed hair follicle or an infection of a sebaceous gland in the edge of the eyelid. The infecting organism is usually a staphylococcus.
This disease occurs due to debilitated condition of the system. Some children seem more prone to these infections than others.
Stye has all the the signs of inflammation, swelling, redness, pain and heat or warmth and occurs on the edge of the eyelid.
What are causes of eye stye
Stye results from an infection of the hair follicles of the eyelid which leads to blockage of the hair follicles. It may also results from blocking of the gland by dirt or due to error of refraction.
Recurrent stye occurs because the infection is spread from one hair shaft to another often by the child rubbing it to relieve itching.
The real cause of stye is the toxic condition of the child's system brought about by wrong eating habits, especially consumption of foods such as white bread, refined cereals, boiled potatoes, pudding, pies and confectionery.
The disease makes its appearance when the child is in a run down condition and below par. Eye strain is also a subsidiary factor in the onset of stye.
Symptoms of eye stye
A stye gives rise to a throbbing pain which can go out of proportion. It can be felt for a day or two even before the stye is visible. It is accompanied by redness, swelling and oedema of the lid and conjunctiva.
Sometimes, the infection disappears quickly, without forming into a red swelling. But other styes worsen rapidly until the eyelid swells up. In the final stages, the stye will burst and discharge pus, causing the eyelid to stick together during the night in severe cases.
Home Remedies To Treat A Eye Stye.
Use herbal home remedies at the first signs of discomfort, i.e., pain, redness or watering.
• Boil a teaspoon of turmeric in two cups of water. Reduce it to one cup. Cool. Strain 4-5 times through a fine muslin. This extract can be used as an eye drop - a drop in the infected eye 3-4 times a day. Helps to get rid of a stye.
• Boil a teaspoon of coriander seeds with a cupful of water for a while, like a herbal tea preparation. Use this to wash the eyes 3-4 times a day.
• Guava leaves, warmed and placed on a warm damp cloth, and then used as a compress, reduce the redness, pain and swelling.
• Take a cup of water. Dissolve 2-3 granules of alum in it. Use as an eyewash.
• The use of clove. This spice should be rubbed in water and applied over the stye. This will give relief from the stye. Helps to get rid of a stye.
• Boil a handful of acacia leaves in two cups of water. Make a decoction and use as a compress on the eyelids. It reduces swelling and pain. Helps to get rid of a stye.
• A grated potato used as a poultice, reduce swelling in inflamed eyes.
• Slit an aloe leaf lengthwise (the leaves are thick). Place the pulpy side on the sore eye. It reduces itchiness in inflamed and sore eyes.
• Another poultice is made by baking or grilling an apple. Mash it, wrap it in a damp cloth and while it is still very warm, but not enough to cause burns, use it as a poultice. Helps to get rid of a stye.
All above the best natural home remedies to treat a stye and also beneficial for reducing the pain and swelling in a stye.
Surgical drainage of the stye may also be necessary if the stye is not responding to these above home treatment.
Preventive measures for eye stye include always washing hands before touching the eyes and keeping good eye hygiene, especially for contact users.
Are eye stye contagious?
Many eye infections are contagious, and eye styes can certainly be passed on from one person to another very easily. A high standard of hygiene is necessary with no sharing of towels or facecloths.
Eye Stye Prevention Tips
• Wash hands thoroughly before touching the skin around the eye. Careful attention to cleaning excess oils from the edges of the lids may help prevent styes in susceptible persons.
• Avoid sharing eye makeup, especially if you're prone to recurring styes.
• Stress and strain to eyes especially working for a long time on the computer.
• Contact lenses should not be worn during infection or drainage of a stye.
Self Care strategies for Living with Eye Problems and Defective vision
Best Eye Care Tips for You
Eyes may be tough but they need to be cared for, particularly from exposure to dirt, dust, pollution and smoky atmosphere.
Tips for healthy eyes
• Get into the habit of starting the day by splashing your open eyes with cold water, so that they are thoroughly cleaned and stimulated.
• Avoid using too much of eye drops, rather it is better to squeeze fresh cucumber juice into your eyes.
• Drink 6-8 glasses of water daily.
• Your sleep pattern should be composed of at least 7 hrs.
• Make sure to remove all traces of eye make up before going to bed for it might cause infection in the roots of eyelashes.
• Do rest your eyes at least every 30 minutes when you are reading, sewing, using a computer or the likes, by looking up and focussing at distant objects.
• Make sure that your diet contains good sources of Vitamin A, such as cereals, celery, oily fish, egg yolk and liver. If your eyes are itchy, watery or bloodshot you could be lacking in Vitamin B2 which can be found in brewer's yeast, liver and whole grain cereals.
• Do make sure that your computer and television screens are sharply focused.
• Do not rub or stretch the skin under the eyes-it is very delicate and is easily damaged.
• Don't read in poor light; the light should come from behind or above rather than from the front.
• Don't look directly at the sun, as you might be tempted to do during an eclipse; even the darkened sun can cause severe and permanent damage. Similarly, avoid staring at any bright or glaring lights.
• Don't read for more than two hours at a stretch. Give a rest in between to your eyes for 10 min by putting the palms of your hands over them and shutting out the light.
• Do wear sunglasses when in bright sunlight.
Castor oil for beautiful eyebrows and eyelashes
Applying pure castor oil to your eyebrows and lashes, particularly those who have scanty growth will make them grow thick and long.
Eye exercise : The following exercises will loosen the strained and contracted muscles
surrounding the eyes :
Keep your head still and relaxed. Gently move the eyes up and down six times. Repeat
the same movement twice or thrice at two-second intervals The eyes should move slowly
and regularly as far down as possible and then as far up as possible.
Move the eyes from side to side as far as possible, without any force or effort six times.
Repeat two or three times.
Hold the index finger of your right hand about eight inches in front of the eyes, then look
from the finger to any other large object ten or more feet away - the door or window will
do. Look from one to the other ten times. Do this exercise fairly rapidly.
Move the eyes up gently and slowly in a circle, then move them low in the reverse
direction .
Do this four times in all. Rest for a second and repeat the movements two or
three times, using minimum efforts. All eye muscle exercises should be performed while
seated in a comfortable position.
Neck Exercises : Rotate the neck in circles and semi circles.
move the shoulders clockwise and anti-clockwise briskly, drawing them up as far as
possible several times,
Allow the head to draw forward and backward as far as possible,
Turn the head to the right and left as far as possible several times. These exercises help
to loosen up contracted neck muscles which may restrict blood supply to the head.
Sun gazing : Sit on a bench facing the sun with your eyes closed and gently sway sideways
several times for 18 minutes.
Open the eyes and blink about ten times at the sun and look at
some greenery. This helps shortsight and is good for inflamed eyes.
Splashing : Splash plain, cold water several times on closed eyes. Rub the closed lids briskly
for a minute with a clean towel. This cools the eyes and boosts blood supply.
Palming : Sit comfortably in an armchair or on a settee and relax with your eyes closed. Cover
your eyes with your palsm, right palm over the right eye and left over the left eye. Do not,
however, press down on the eyes.
With your eyes completely covered in this manner, allow your
elbows to drop to your knees, which should be fairly close together.
With your eyes closed thus,
try to imagine blackness, which grows blacker and blacker. Palming reduces strain and relaxes
the eyes and its surrounding tissues.
Swinging : Stand with your feet 12 inches apart, hands held loosely at the sides, the whole
body and mind relaxed. Gently sway your body from side to side, slowly, steadily, with the heels
rising alternatively but not the rest of the foot.
Imagine you are the pendulum of the clock, and
move just as slowly. Swinging should be done in front of a window or a picture.
You will see the
object moving in the opposite direction of your swing. This must be noted and encouraged.
When you face one end of the window or object, blink once. This exercise has a very beneficial
effect upon the eyes and nervous system.
Diet change strategies:
Using Ayurveda Therapy:
Natural, uncooked foods are the best diet. These include fresh fruits, such as oranges, apples,
grapes, peaches, plums, cherries ; green vegetable like lettuce, cabbage, spinach, turnip tops ;
root vegetables like potatoes, turnips, carrot, onions and beetroots ; nuts, dried fruits and dairy
products.
Cereals are also necessary , but they should only be consumed sparingly. Genuine wholemeal
bread is the best and most suitable.
Nans, cakes, pastries, white sugar, white bread,
confectionary, tea, coffee, etc., together with meat, fish, or eggs, soon play havoc with the
digestion and the body and should therefore be avoided.
The value of vitamin A for improving vision must be stressed. The intake of sufficient quantities
of this vitamin is essential as a safeguard against or treatment of defective vision or eye disease
of any kind.
The best sources of this vitamin are cod liver oil, raw spinach, turnip tops, cream,
cheese, butter, egg yolk, tomatoes, lettuce, carrot, cabbage, soya beans, green peas, wheat
germ, fresh milk, oranges and dates.
Vitamin & Nutrient Associations
Even when we try to eat well, we're disadvantaged. The nutritional content of most food has been compromised over the years, not only by deficient soils and modern production, transportation, storage and processing methods, but also by the enormous amounts of chemical and artificial substances added to promote growth, storage life, taste and appearance.
It's for this reason that more and more medical authorities are advocating the use of vitamin and mineral supplements. However, finding them in the right combination can be both confusing and costly.
Good quality nutrition products make use of knowledge gained from the botanical world's 6,000 year history. They incorporate health building nutritional herbs with the best modern technology to help our bodies cleanse and detoxify so that the cells - the tiniest living units - can be as fully nourished as possible.
This allows the cells to grow, repair and to perform their functions with the best possible efficiency so that we feel and look better and are more able to prevent and fight disease. Once the body begins to clear itself of toxins it can more efficiently absorb nutrition.
