Abrasions, Cuts and Scratches are often something that can be dealt with very easily but other times they can lead to dire consequences.
Types of Skin Cuts and Scratches
Cuts are caused by sharp objects, which penetrate or damage the skin surface.
Scratches are mild form of cuts. They are also caused by sharp objects and normally would break the skin though they may not bleed.
Abrasions are caused by rubbing or friction on the skin. They may cause discoloration of the skin or they may be a graze of the skin like when a child falls on gravel and grazes their skin. In that case the wound is likely to bleed.
Rug burns and board burns are also examples of abrasion, because they are caused by friction.
Risk Factors:
If abrasions, cuts and scratches have been caused in a way that the environment is not dangerous then often they don’t require any special attention in most cases.
You need to watch though in case the wound gets infected by bacteria. If it the wound is infected, it will show symptoms such as redness, swollen skin, and production of puss which can be of the color yellow or either green.
When to seek Medical Advice:
If the scratch is made by animal claws doctor should be approached immediately particularly if you are living in a country where there is a chance the animal may have rabies.
If damage is caused by a rusty metallic surface it can cause the wound to become septic. In this case you need to be aware if the patient is up to date with their tetanus shots.
Depending on the situation, the doctor would prescribe antibiotics, lotion or even shots.
Treatment/Therapy:
In all three cases, the wounds can bleed.
When it bleeds the tiny blood vessels located underneath the skin are ruptured.
Platelets form clot to stop the bleeding and a scab can also form.
If the bleeding does not stop fairly quickly then the wound should cleaned using lukewarm water and mild soap. The wound should then be treated with Antibacterial ointment or with Aloe vera gel and it should be covered with a bandage.
The antibacterial ointment helps kill germs.
Aloe vera gel promotes rapid healing of the wound (Think of it as a Band Aid in a bottle)
The bandage will prevent bacteria from getting into the would and causing infection.
The bandage should be changed everyday and the wound should be kept dry.
If a cut is very deep then you will need to visit a doctor who will assess the best was to deal with it.
The treatment may be traditional stitches though nowadays there are other options with glues and special bandages that sick on to the skin and bind the would closed. These products can, in some cases, avoid the need for stitches and give an effectively scar free healing to the wound.
