Hi,

Today we are looking at depression and also stress.

While these two issues are different they are very often interrelated.

Lifestyle builds pressures that then leads to stress in our daily lives and that flows on to the physical symptoms of stress and depression.

There are so many ways to address these issues that anyone who presents as having 'The Magic Bullet', a single solution that works for everyone, is basically just wrong.

Our article below on diet and supplementation in relation to depression will be relevant for many people so if worth review.

The following article on stress is interconnected as many of the things that create stress in our lives are also factors in depression.

When this all gets out of balance it can be very difficult to get things back on track and to feel 'normal' again.

I am older now, 66 yo, and life if full of activity and interest.
There are a lot of people who I know, peers of around the same age, who I watch with interest.
Some are doing all sorts of things with their lives like my wife and I are and others seem to be just getting old.
Without new challenges and new interests things everything slows down and the problems we have in our lives seem to be much bigger, and much more urgent, than they need to be.

When dealing with work pressures and young families life in intense and that can also lead to stress and feeling of not coping and maybe into depression.

How to find the balance for all of these things?

Look through the articles below and I will add some additional comments about more specific things I have found in my own life that have been useful for me, just in case you relate to them.

Optimal Health Tip:

Carry a little sport bottle at all times. If you feel hungry, take a drink. This works great, for example, when you're at your desk or computer as it helps to curb your appetite.

Eat a Good Breakfast, people who skip breakfast burn 5 percent fewer calories than those who eat a healthy morning meal.

Substitute activity for eating. When the cravings hit, go to the gym or health club if possible; or clean, or walk around the block.

Include two fruits or vegetables in every meal or snack. You'll feel fuller and cut back on calories from other foods.

Drink Healthy. Always be mindful of whatever you are drinking. It is recommended that you drink a lot of water to keep you hydrated and to have a nice and glowing skin.

Also, drinking semi-skimmed milk as well as fruit juices will be very helpful. On the flip side, drinking alcohol, sodas and soft drinks are really not recommended since they contain of chemicals that are of no good to the body.

Be Happy. Being happy elevates your mood thus relieving you from stresses and worries and promoting good health. Thus, smile and be happy.

Yummy Smoothie Recipes! Here are a few tasty smoothies sure to curb your sweet tooth and fill you up.

BANANA SPLIT SMOOTHIE
1 cup nonfat milk
1 1/2 cups frozen banana slices
1/2 cups pineapple chunks
5 frozen strawberries
1 1/2 to 2 tablespoons sweetened cocoa powder (to taste)
Pour milk into the blender first. Add cocoa and then fruit. Put cover on and blend until smooth.

BASIC FRUIT SMOOTHIE
1 quarter strawberries, hulled
1 banana, broken into chunks
2 peaches
1 cup orange or peach or mango or apple juice
2 cups ice
In a blender, combine strawberries, banana and peaches. Blend until fruit is pureed. Blend in the juice. Add ice and blend to desired consistency. Pour into glasses and serve.

BERRY ALMOND BLAST
1/2 cups frozen whole berries (use blackberries, strawberries or raspberries)
1 cup nonfat soy milk
3/4 teaspoons almond extract
1/2 cups silken tofu (about 4 ounces)
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
Combine all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. Makes 2 smoothies.

Natural Beauty recipes

Homemade Intensive Conditioner
Mix 1/4 cup of olive oil with 1 egg and apply to hair.

Use more olive oil if your hair is very long.

Cover your head with aluminum foil, then cover with a towel that has been soaked in hot water and wrung out.

Leave on for 30 minutes or overnight for deep conditioning very dry hair, then shampoo as usual.

Help for Dandruff
* Mix one part of antiseptic mouthwash with 9 parts of water and massage to scalp. Rinse after 10 minutes.

* Mix 3 tbsp of lime juice with ¼ cup coconut oil and massage to scalp. Shampoo after 1 hour.

"How to Use Supplements to Battle Depression"

Depression is usually treated as a mental issue that needs to be addressed with methods such as stress relief. We are told to meditate, unplug from social media, start journaling or speak to a counsellor.

It’s always about getting our feelings in check so that we don’t spiral down as vicious cycle of despair and hopelessness.

When someone has an entrenched depression problem then getting professional support is often the best way to begin to deal with the issue.

When someone is sliding towards depression, and beginning to realize that they need to do something to turn things around then there are a number of things they can look at that may help to prevent things getting any words.

• Does diet affect depression?

Our diet plays an important role in how we look and feel. If your diet is clean and you’re getting the nutrients you need, you’ll be in great health and be much less likely to get depressed.

The end result are vegetables and fruit that look like the real thing, but are low in vitamins, minerals and nutrients.

We all have a favorite expression we use to describe being stressed out, and it is partly related to the generation we belong to, or even the place that we live.

Whether you call it being stressed out, overloaded, burned out, ready to break, or anything else, the actual meaning is the same.

And when we hear these terms we understand and relate to what the person is expressing – but of course it is easy to project our own life circumstances and emotions as we listen.

The truth is that we can feel totally stressed without having any obviously recognizable reason. But if we take the time to really analyze our situations and our life in general we are likely to find some culprits lurking.

A typical problem is time management. Many of us have problems fitting in everything that we want or need to do.

This can result in feelings of exhaustion and fatigue….even if we don’t directly attribute the feelings with not completing the things on our to do list it is likely that there is a connection.

So when it comes to stress issues, one of the first things we need to consider is how we manage our time. But it is also important that we have realistic expectations.

For those among us that try to fit 35 hours of living into 24, there is simply no way to meet those expectations. Therefore, we will always feel like failures in some way and we will be exhausted.

Making a list of things to do each day is a great way to manage one’s time – but only if the list is based on realistic timeframes.

When making these lists it is vitally important that they are written in a fashion that one will actually be able to check things off and at the end of the day, feel good about finishing required tasks.

That’s why the list should be prioritized and after those tasks are completed the less important ones are tackled. Any task not completed by the end of the day is moved to the list for the next day.

Our normal routines – what we call our lifestyle, can have a direct impact on our emotional state. Getting enough rest is imperative to having energy and focus.

Stress can come from outside events, from having too much to do and too little time, or from just getting into a rut and starting to feel that you will never get out of it.

Sometimes life seems to keep adding pressure to the point that we don't want to keep doing the things we are currently doing, but we cannot see any alternatives.

Sometimes that can feel like you keep doing more and more, working harder and harder, putting in more and more effort, but in the end you are just staying in the same place. Nothing changes.

If you are in that situation then maybe you need to add something different to what you do, or to make some serious changes.

Just walking out on the current issues can lead to massive drama.
Often that is not a good thing.
Sometimes a smaller change of adding a completely different activity, like a sport, or a new craft or music activity, can add interest to life and give an outlet where you can step away from your problems for a time and get some more balance in your life.

If finances are hard, the pressure is about being able to pay the bills is constant, then additional income may take stress off.

Again, big changes can have difficulties.
Changing jobs, changing careers, changing location, can all shake up existing situations and have potential for better outcomes.
These big changes also have the possibility of making things worse in the short term.

If finances are an issue then adding a separate income stream by working with something that interests you may be the answer.
