It is almost Christmas and we want the general mood to pick up and for people to be happy, but . . . . .
War in Ukraine and Palestine, floods, fires, melting ice caps.
It can all be really depressing, can’t it?

I generally try to stay positive and don’t get into those things. You can get as much as you want of it just watching the news, but there are some things that we need to pay serious attention to in our own lives as well.

Some problems can be sorted with focused attention and changing some habits.
Others are more difficult.

Most people have now had an encounter with Covid.
Many came through it with no ongoing problems.
Others are dealing with Long Covid, and many are not sure what it is that they are actually suffering from and what they can do about it.

This leads us to discussing long term immune/energy/health problems that have no obvious causes and explanations.

A condition that I have become very aware of over the last 30 years is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

Before we lighten up with Christmas and New Year I want to focus specifically on that now for the people who are dealing with this or similar condition.

With everything that is happening in the world, as I mentioned earlier, we sometimes seem to forget that there are a lot of people around us who are suffering in silence and whose lives are being blighted by unexplained health issues.

Focusing on CFS allows people with the condition, and people around them, to get a clearer picture of if CFS really is their problem, and the people with Long Term Covid to see what full CFS is really like and be able to compare their own condition with that.

Late last century an international panel of experts wrote a report to define conditions that identified CFS. Details of that are in the newsletter below.

In our reports below we quote: A number of illnesses have been described that have a similar spectrum of symptoms to CFS.

These include fibromyalgia syndrome, myalgic encephalomyelitis, neurasthenia, multiple chemical sensitivities, and chronic mononucleosis.

Most of us will not even recognize many of these conditions but we know enough to realize that CSF can be very serious and if we think we, or someone we know, may have it we should pay attention.

My own interest started when I began using herbal supplements back in the 1990’s.
As an adult I had always been fit and active but was normally very weary.
From early childhood I had a cyclic tiredness that would hit me every 6 weeks or so.

Doctors could never find what caused that but, when it happened, I would come home from school, go to bed and sleep for 24 hours or more, then be better again.

Weird, but like so many other people, I just learned to live with it.

When I started to use the nutrition products that I’ve been using for these last 30 years the condition improved and then went away.

STAY MENTALLY AND SOCIALLY ACTIVE

Just like physical exercise can help keep your heart, muscles and bones stay "younger" longer, exercising your brain to learn new things and re-hone old skills can help keep your mind "younger" longer.

And developing new relationships through the inevitable shifts and changes in ones life, especially as one advances in years, is simply spiritually essential.

Consider if you are more or less retired and your kids are all grown, some of the following:

· Take new classes, attend a seminar, buy a tape series.
· Take up the piano or other musical instrument (again!)
· Join a band or the choir
· Teach a class, volunteer your talents
· Learn or re-learn a foreign language.
· Take up a new hobby, avocation or sport.
· Travel, studying the culture and the history of the places you visit.
· Try balancing your checkbook by hand rather than use a calculator or the computer.
· Keep a daily journal or write an "autobiography" even if no one ever reads it but your great-great grandchildren!
· Write poetry, rhymes, riddles or short stories.
· Do jigsaw puzzles and the like to preserve your spatial skills.
· Do crossword puzzles or play Scrabble.
· Play bridge.
Play chess, even if the computer always wins!
· Plan, plant, harvest and enjoy consuming the "fruits" of a garden.
· Emphasize game shows, history, science and discussion panels when watching TV.
· Read mind-stimulating books. We all have a list of books that we have always wanted to read but just never got around to do it.

Natural Health & Beauty Recipes


Apple Stuffing

1/4 cup chopped onions
1/4 cup chopped celery
2 tablespoons margarine
4 cups dry bread cubes
1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning
1/2 teaspoon dried sage
1 cup diced, unpeeled apples
1/2 teaspoon dried sage
Freshly−ground black pepper
1/2 cup chicken broth
Cook onions and celery in margarine for 5 minutes, or until tender.
Combine onions and celery with all other dry ingredients.
Add broth, and toss.
Yields stuffing for a 10 to 12 pound turkey.

Natural Beauty Recipe

Creamy Sun-Tan Lotion

3/4 cup (180 ml.) water
3 tea bags (do not use instant tea)
1/4 cup (60 ml.) lanolin
1/4 cup (60 ml.) sesame oil
1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml.) perfume (optional)
Heat the water to boiling, add tea bags. Leave them to brew for 20 minutes and squeeze them occasionally before removing. Put lanolin, sesame oil and 1/4 cup strong tea into blender. Cover and process at low speed.
Remove cap immediately and pour in the remaining tea in a steady stream. Use a rubber spatula to keep ingredients arend the processing blades. Add perfume and give fragrance to the sun-tan lotion.
This recipe makes about 1 cup of a soft, tan-colored cream which spreads smoothly on the skin, and gives a sensation of moistness. It dries without feeling sticky.
This cream actually repels water and will stay on though swimming.
Creamy Sun-Tan Lotion will screen out about half of the burning sun rays while allowing a large percentage of the tanning rays to get through. However, if you burn after 5 minutes of exposure, do not rely on this cream to protect you.

Cucumber Lotion

Peel 1 or 2 large Cucumbers, cut them into slices, and place them in a double boiler, which should be closely covered. Cook them slowly until they are soft.
Then put the pieces into a fine linen bag and squeeze them until all the juice has been extracted.
Add to the extracted juice one-fourth of rectified spirits of wine (or whisky) and one third of Elder-flower water.
Shake the mixture well and pour into small bottles ready for use

Cucumber Sunburn Lotion

Chop up a Cucumber and squeeze out the juice with a lemon-squeezer.
Mix this with a quantity of glycerine and rose-water mixed together in equal parts.



"Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Symptoms"


Chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms can vary widely and can be tough to discern between the syndrome and other possible causes. Knowing what symptoms to look for can help you to determine if you might have this syndrome and help you to have the proper conversation with your doctor.

The most obvious symptom of chronic fatigue syndrome is fatigue. Everyone gets tired from time to time, but this is a different kind of fatigue. You may feel a sense of total exhaustion, even after having a good night’s sleep.

The fatigue must last for a long period of time before you can be diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. Sometimes people can have an infection that makes them feel fatigued for a few days or a week. This is more of a chronic condition.

Headaches are another hallmark of chronic fatigue syndrome. If you have fatigue combined with headaches that aren’t like any you’ve had before, this should raise an alarm for you. You may also experience joint pain or muscle weakness.

People who have chronic fatigue syndrome often have symptoms related to their mood. You may feel depressed or irritable as part of this syndrome. You may also notice that you feel confused more often.

And while this syndrome is marked by fatigue, it can also be marked by having the inability to sleep. Insomnia is a very common symptom of chronic fatigue syndrome and one that can be very frustrated when you already feel so tired.

You may also have a sore throat that doesn’t come from another source such as allergies or infection. And it’s not uncommon to experience swollen lymph glands when you have this syndrome.

But as you’ve read through these symptoms, you may see that they are pretty general and can also come from other problems. For example, arthritis can cause joint pain and other infections can cause sore throats and swollen lymph glands.

Headaches can be caused by a wide variety of problems including stress, migraine, and even tumors. Depression also causes many of the same symptoms as chronic fatigue syndrome so it must also be ruled out.

If you have some of these symptoms, it’s important to make sure you get examined by your doctor. Your doctor may discuss your history as well as take blood tests and work to rule out other possible sources.

Once other possibilities are ruled out, you may be diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. Having a knowledge of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) symptoms can help you to know when it’s time to visit your healthcare provider.

What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

Definition of chronic fatigue syndrome.

A great deal of debate has surrounded the issue of how best to define CFS.

In an effort to resolve these issues, an international panel of CFS research experts convened in 1994 to draft a definition of CFS that would be useful both to researchers studying the illness and to clinicians diagnosing it.

In essence, in order to receive a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome, a patient must satisfy two criteria:

1. Have severe chronic fatigue of six months or longer duration with other known medical conditions excluded by clinical diagnosis; and

2. Concurrently have four or more of the following symptoms:

• substantial impairment in short-term memory or concentration;

• sore throat;

• tender lymph nodes;

• muscle pain;

• multi-joint pain without swelling or redness;

• headaches of a new type, pattern or severity;

• unrefreshing sleep;

• and post-exertional malaise lasting more than 24 hours.

The symptoms must have persisted or recurred during six or more consecutive months of illness and must not have predated the fatigue.

A number of illnesses have been described that have a similar spectrum of symptoms to CFS.

These include fibromyalgia syndrome, myalgic encephalomyelitis, neurasthenia, multiple chemical sensitivities, and chronic mononucleosis.

Although these illnesses may present with a primary symptom other than fatigue, chronic fatigue is commonly associated with all of them.

The Sunday School Teacher asks, "Now, Johnny, tell me frankly do you say prayers before eating?"

A college drama group presented a play in which one character would stand on a trap door and announce, "I descend into hell!"

A stagehand below would then pull a rope, the trapdoor would spring, and the actor would drop from view.

The play was well received. When the actor playing the part became ill, another actor who was quite overweight took his place. When the new actor announced, "I descend into hell!" the stagehand pulled the rope, and the actor began his plunge, but became hopelessly stuck. No amount of tugging on the rope could make him descend.

One student in the balcony jumped up and yelled:

"Hallelujah! Hell is full!"

"Yes, sweetheart," he answered, "God made me a long time ago."

"Oh," she paused, "grandpa, did God make me too?"

Feeling their respective faces again, she observed, "God's getting better at it, isn't he ?"
