Today we look at a number of areas around weight control, recipes, eating in social and travel situations, nutrition supplements, and a range of other things.

We are at the end of June, half of 2023 has passed by, and it probably time to review how the year is going in relation to what we wanted and hoped for this year.

Here in Australia we are in the middle of our winter and people are huddled away wherever they can keep warm.
Many people are not doing a lot of exercise, and many are not being very social as the weather is not conducive to BBQ’s or outdoor activity.

Others people are taking the chance to travel and go to somewhere warm so today we are looking at how to handle diet when moving about.

In other countries, weather is different but we are all at mid-year and this is a good time to review what we need to do to finish 2023 on a good note and with a good energy to take into 2024.

Bend your knees deeply to reach an item on a low shelf, then straighten up without leaning forward or holding onto anything for support.

When you get into or out of a chair, don't depend on the arms for help. Instead, let your thigh muscles contract to lower and raise your body while your back is kept straight.

Natural Health & Beauty Recipes


HEALTH COOKIES

1 c. raisins
1/2 c. chopped dates
1/2 c. chopped apples
1 c. water
1/2 c. vegetable shortening
2 well beaten eggs
2 tsp. artificial sweetener (such as sweet n low)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. flour
3/4 c. chopped nuts

Boil raisins, dates, and apples in water for 3 minutes.
Add shortening to melt, then cool and add rest of ingredients with the nuts last. Mix well.
Drop by teaspoons onto cookie sheet.
Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.
Store in refrigerator in an airtight container.

Vegetarian Protein Shake Recipe
In a blender, combine the following:
2 bananas
1 tsp of bee pollen
1-2 Tbs of honey, or sweeten to taste
1/2 whole lemon -- rind, seeds, and all
6 walnuts
Strawberries, when available
Put all the above in 1/2 to 2 cup water, depending on how thin you like your drink.
Then blend it all to the desired consistency.

Healthy Avocado Smoothie Recipe
1 medium or large ripe avocado
1 1/2 cup fresh pineapple
1 Tbs honey
1 1/2 cup orange juice
2 tsp lime juice (optional)
1/4 tsp coconut flavoring
2 ice cubes
Peel and slice avocado and pineapple into small chunks. Crush ice with the orange juice.
Combine with rest of ingredients and puree in blender until smooth.

Health Nut Milk Shake
3/4 cup almonds, soaked 2-8 hours or
3/4 cup cashews, soaked 1-2 hours
4 dates, soaked 1-2 hours (save soak water)
3-4 peeled frozen bananas
3 cups cold filtered water or apple juice

Optional flavorings:
1 tsp non-alcoholic vanilla extract
2 Tbs raw carob powder
A few fresh berries
1 tsp ground cinnamon
In blender, combine nuts, dates and water or juice until smooth.
Break frozen banana into pieces, add to mixture and blend until smooth.
Add one or more optional flavors if desired.
Pour into glasses. Serves 4.

Natural Beauty Recipe

Bath Salts
2 c Epson salts
1 c Sea salt or kosher salt
6 dr Essential oil
1/2 ts Glycerine
Food coloring

Mix well in ziplock bag. Store airtight.
Note: Add 2 T. rice flour to keep free flowing.

Herb Bath Bags
Cheesecloth or muslin
Needle or sewing machine
Thread
1 Ribbons, lace -- trim etc
Make bags out of muslin or cheesecloth. Decorate with trims and notions.
Add ribbons so that the bags can hang from the faucet into the bath water.
Fill bags with herbal bath mixtures.
If you are really handy with machine or needle, bags can be made into shapes

But what about going out to dinner with friends? Worse, how do you stay on track when your dream vacation has you seated by the dessert cart at every meal?

Eating right when you’re out of your comfort zone can actually be easier than when you are at home, so long as you think smart and plan ahead.

Daily Plan

Incorporate meals out like any others. Don’t skip meals beforehand, setting yourself up to be starving, then overeat. Plan.
Don’t be afraid to call ahead and find out what the specials are going to be and figure out a couple of choices, so that you don’t stress out when you arrive and order foods that are not the best options for your diet.

If the restaurant or event is going to serve you buffet-style, again, call ahead to plan. If that’s not an option, here are a couple ideas. First, ask someone with whom you’re comfortable sharing your dietary concerns to help you.

Tell him or her what foods you can eat (or what you cannot eat) and ask the person to fill a plate for you. Or second, walk up to the buffet table(s) beforehand with no plate. Just take a casual stroll around and see which foods are being served.

Then decide if you would like to ask someone else to place your selections on a plate for you or if you would prefer to get them yourself.

Slow and Steady

First of all, use manners and eat slowly. Not only will this help with your digestion, it slows your eating down so that you don’t “gulp” and be a chow-hound, eating everything in sight.

If out with others, remember you are also there for socializing, so talk between bites. Set your eating utensils down while you chew.

Have a sip of water between bites. The goal is not to see how fast can you wolf down the food while someone else is talking.

Have fun along the way

Food has become our society’s way of bringing people together, bonding friends, and building relationships.

Unfortunately, for those of us looking to cut back on what and how much we eat, this can make previously enjoyable dinner dates to be dreaded and avoided tasks.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Remember why you’ve been invited out in the first place: to enjoy the company of others.

You do not need certain amounts of food or certain types of food to accomplish this. Still go out, but help choose a place with foods you can eat.

For example, opt for a restaurant with salads and low-fat menu choices instead of a place with all deep-fried batter-dipped menu choices and heavy desserts.

The worst thing you can do for your self-confidence is to shut yourself off from your circle of family and friends, or to stay shut in the house all the time. After all, when you do meet your weight loss goal, you still want friends around to enjoy it with!

Strength in numbers

If you’re nervous about your willpower, go through a couple of trial runs with other friends who are watching what they eat.

In this case, peer pressure can be a positive thing, as you all encourage one another to make healthy meal decisions.

Avoid the urge to compete with one another to see who can drink the most water and eat only shredded lettuce leaves. Instead, choose an old favorite and split it with a partner.

This way, you won’t feel deprived and your portion size will automatically be limited. Not only will your waistlines be smaller, but so will your bills!
