Hi,

Today I’d like to focus on more specifics around healthy ageing.

Last month we covered doing a little of something, of anything, every day, to support lifetime health.

The focus there was exercise, and how little focused activity it actually takes to keep muscle strength, bone strength, and general physical wellness, as we age.

The other major areas to look at are what we should not put into our bodies and, of course, what we should be eating.

Smoking, drugs, and alcohol are all problematic and there are programs everywhere to advise against excess in these areas, or to promote cutting them out entirely.

I’d like to focus today on the positive side of what we can consume that’ll work with us to keep us strong over time.

Over 30 years ago I was introduced to Herbal.life products.

Healthy Smoothie Recipes

BERRY BANANA SMOOTHIE

1 large banana, peeled, sliced and frozen
3/4 cups frozen or fresh strawberries, raspberries or blueberries
3/4 cups low‐ or non‐fat vanilla frozen yogurt
1 12ounces can or bottle of regular or diet ginger ale, chilled

Place all the ingredients in a blender or food processor. Cover and blend at highest speed until smooth.

Note: if you use fresh berries, try to use a frozen banana, and if you use a fresh banana, go for frozen berries, otherwise your drink will be too thin.
Both fruits being frozen will give you a satisfyingly thick drink.

BERRY BLISS SMOOTHIE

2 scoops raspberry sherbet
4 strawberries
15 blueberries
5 blackberries
16 ounces orange juice (or juice of your choice)

Put all ingredients in a blender, juice last, then blend until smooth.
To add thickness try adding more sherbet or ice to the smoothie. Pour into a tall glass to serve.

BERRY BLUE SMOOTHIE

2 cups fresh or slightly thawed frozen blueberries
1 (8‐ounces) container low fat vanilla yogurt
1 (6‐ounces) cups milk
1 (12‐ounces) can pineapple juice
3 tablespoons honey
12 to 16 ice cubes

Place all ingredients, except the ice cubes, into container of electric blender and blend on high until smooth.
With blender running, add 2 to 3 ice cubes at a time through the center opening in the lid until all ice cubes have been added.
Blend until smooth. Serve immediately. Makes 4 servings.

BETA CAROTENE BLAST

3 small ice cubes
2 apricots (sliced and pitted)
1/2 papaya (frozen in chunks)
1/2 mango (frozen in chunks)
1/2 cups carrot juice
1 tablespoon honey

Add ingredients (except for honey) to blender in the order listed, then blend on high speed for 30 seconds.

Add honey and blend a few seconds more. Serve in a frosted glass.

Option: add orange juice for a thinner consistency.

Natural Beauty Recipe

Lighten Circles under Eyes
To lighten dark circles under your eyes, wrap a grated raw potato in cheesecloth and apply to eyelids for 15-20 minutes. Wipe off residue and apply an eye cream.

Egg, Avocado & Mud Facial Mask
(best for oilier skin types)
Clay is available in powder form at any health food store.
Mix 1 tbsp. dry clay with 1 egg yolk,
1/4 of a mashed avocado and enough witch hazel to create a smooth mixture.
Mud dries excess sebum while the egg yolk and avocado replenish lost moisture. Witch hazel tones skin.

Egg & Olive Oil Hair Mask
Mix two whole eggs with four tablespoons of olive oil. Smooth through hair.
Wrap head with plastic wrap, and leave in hair for 10 minutes. Rinse well.

How To Get Comfortable Going Through Medical Emergencies


Medical emergencies are an inevitable part of life. There is no age limit for them. In addition, there is a wide range of medical emergencies that can occur, from a heart attack to a gunshot wound.

Being effective in an emergency requires knowing what to do when you don’t know what to do.

Implement these steps to get more comfortable handling medical emergencies:

1. Be prepared.

Have plans and materials to minimize the negative effects of a crisis. Know important emergency numbers, or have them glued to a wall.

Keep important medical documents handy and have a first aid kit. Keep one in the house and in the car or wherever you spend a lot of your time.

Learn what symptoms to look out for. Heart attacks don’t look like they do in movies. The symptoms are also different for men and women. Prepare yourself with knowledge.

2. Call emergency services.

On the call, hold back from blurting everything out and answer their questions in the order they ask them.

Their questions may mean the difference between getting what is needed for the emergency or not. Report accurate information. Then follow their instructions.

3. Get first aid training.

Learn to perform CPR and chest compressions. For example, if it’s a gunshot wound, learn to apply constant pressure to the wound.

Do everything in your power not to allow the wound to bleed out more than it already is. Bind it if you can.

Don’t remove bloody bandages; instead, keep adding bandages. Even if you don’t live in a violent area, car accidents, and random house accidents can cause bleeding, which could be deadly if not stopped.

Get trained on administering necessary medication, like knowing how to use a glucagon kit to help a person with diabetes.

Learn to use an EpiPen for people who have allergies and learn how to do the Heimlich maneuver on someone who is choking.

4. Practice useful techniques.

Your body won’t do something right unless you practice. Teach every member of your family how to perform basic emergency first aid.

The more you practice, the less likely you will panic in an emergency. Have frequent practice drills to keep the knowledge fresh in your mind.

5. Force yourself to calm down.

Before you do anything, take a pause and assess the situation. Instead of acting on impulse and severely messing up, take a proper look at what is happening. Count aloud in your head from one to ten.

It persuades your body and brain to believe that there’s no need to panic.

Take deep breaths, focus on breathing into your stomach, and exhale fully. Repeat this 2 or 3 times to calm down.

6. Avoid telling the person going through the emergency to calm down.

Try to keep them focused on you. Stay close to the person if they are okay with it.

Offer them gentle reassurance. Speak to them using short, positive statements.

7. Keep yourself busy.

Anxiety increases when you’re just standing around waiting. Use the time to pack clothes for the hospital or apply pressure on a wound. It’s easier to maintain composure when you keep yourself busy.

8. Visualize happy thoughts.

Picturing a positive, cheerful scene in your mind can help you relax and turn off your body’s stress response. Picture the ideal outcome of the negative situation you’re in.

It will positively affect your brain, helping you remain prepared or ready to deal with the problem at hand.

In an emergency, remaining calm will enable you to make better decisions and act logically.

It will psychologically prepare you to handle the situation. It’s best to act fast and without panicking.

Staying calm can mean the difference between life and death for you or the person going through a medical emergency. You’ll need all your concentration and focus.

Remember to be flexible to the needs of each person. Be quick to adapt if what you’re trying isn’t working.

Mindful Eating: Feel Great and Lose Weight!

We’re in unusual times. It’s more important to focus on health than ever before. Stress can lead to poor eating habits.

It’s no secret that many people turn to food during times of high anxiety. This can result in overeating and poor food choices.

Food can be enjoyable and a promoter of good health at the same time.

What is EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing - Psychotherapy Treatment?

Its purpose is one that’s intended to relieve stress and other negative feelings that can be caused by traumatic memories.

This can be living through a traumatic event yourself or witnessing it happen to someone else.

There are three different parts to the EMDR therapy that can be a help to people.

The first part is dealing with the events and memories that are responsible for the emotional problems you’ve been experiencing.

In this first part of dealing with the events, you’ll learn how to create new links that you can associate with the events and memories.

EMDR therapy works in that it can have you feeling safe and in control in your environment rather than afraid and feeling like the world is not a safe place for you to be in.

The second part that can help people who use EMDR techniques is targeting the present situations that might provoke your distress.

During the sessions, while you’re going through the phases, you’ll be doing work designed to desensitize any external and internal triggers you may have.

What You Need to Know about Finding Culturally Competent Health Care

When you’re choosing a doctor, there are a wide range of things to consider in order to feel safe and comfortable. Many patients are making cultural competence a priority.

It’s a growing concern for doctors too. A recent poll by Healthgrades, a US company that collects information about health care providers, found that “31% of physicians said their level of cultural competency affected their ability to provide the best possible care either somewhat or a lot.”

The American Psychological Association defines cultural competence as the ability to understand, appreciate, and interact with others with different backgrounds and beliefs.

That can include ethnic groups, the LGBTQ+ community, the disabled, and more.

Progress is being made on several fronts, but there are still significant obstacles. For example, only 5% of US physicians identify as Black or African American, a figure that has increased by only 4 percentage points over the last 120 years.

Finding a doctor who understands your unique needs can help you to have a more positive experience. Learn more about culturally competent health care.

Finding a Culturally Competent Doctor:

1. Check your insurance.

You’ll probably have more options if you’re insured through your employer, rather than public programs. Call your insurance company or search providers using filters based on your preferences.

2. Seek referrals.

Your family and friends are an excellent source of recommendations.

You can also contact community clinics and affinity groups, like the National Hispanic Medical Association or the National Medical Association, which represents African American physicians.

3. Discuss accommodations.

Make it easier for your provider to work with you by notifying them in advance about your needs.

For example, hospitals that receive federal funding are legally required to provide an interpreter if you have trouble communicating in English.

4. Ask questions.

When you’re considering a provider, find out more about their training and experience.

Ask them if they’ve treated patients with your background and how that influences the care they provide.

5. Look around.

You can learn more by observing their offices. Are there posters and brochures with inclusive language and images? How does the staff interact with other patients?

6. Go online.

If it’s difficult to find a local provider, virtual visits may expand your options. That can be especially helpful for mental health services.

Other Tips:

1. Support training.

Many medical schools now offer cultural competence courses to help doctors become more prepared.

However, the total contact time is usually less than one week, so more needs to be done.

2. Extend invitations.

Community involvement can help build trust and respect too. Let local providers know about neighborhood events and organizations.

3. Do research.

Depending on your background, you may be at higher risk for high blood pressure, diabetes, and other issues.

Educating yourself empowers you when it comes to setting priorities and making decisions about your medical care and lifestyle.

4. Volunteer your services.

Use your life experience and language skills to benefit others. Check with local hospitals and clinics about service opportunities.

5. Keep records.

Writing things down is a smart strategy for any patient. Make a list of questions you want to ask and take notes during appointments.

Provide your doctor with accurate information about your symptoms and medical history.

6. Bring a family member.

Ask someone you trust to accompany you on doctor visits. They can help with communications and advocating for your needs.

Both patients and physicians have a role to play in strengthening cultural competency in health care.

Meanwhile, making informed decisions and communicating openly with your doctor can help you and your family to get the treatment you deserve.
