Hi,

I hope the New Year is being kind to you.

We had a present during January with the birth of a new grandchild.
He is a cute little fella and we did a road trip up to Sydney to meet him during the month.

Of course, as we all know, road trips are down-time and as such the rules about diet, exercise, etc, do not apply, don’t they???

In last months newsletter I was talking about preparing for a New Year and setting plans about what I need to do for my own health and well being.

When I was younger I would set a goal with date to achieve it and clear path to make it happen.
That worked, but it can be a hard thing to follow and often the results do not stay with you once the goal is reached and you move on to other challenges.

Now I am old, my perspective has changed a little.
It seems sensible now to be more gentle on myself and to plan these things into lifestyle with less pressure.
Lifestyle changes have a tendency to stay with you after the initial goals are reached.
It also makes it easier on everyone around you. "What, breakfast now so we can get out and have lunch with the family? Sure, why not?"
Go and see something this morning so there is not time for a morning walk today? No problem.


In my case I identified the things I needed to work on:
- Drop some weight. (Herbal.life shakes and only one main meal makes that easy to do.)
- Walk 10,000 steps a day.
- Drink more water (2lt a day).
- Stretch regularly to free up lower back
- Avoid a couple of food groups (chocolate, soft drinks)
- Get 8 hours sleep a night.
- Gym twice a week.

I put the list on an Excel sheet and mark them off each day outcomes from the day before.
Gym is still a challenge as I have a lot of work activity, and a new business, and have not put together a routine to set aside the time, so I'm not counting that yet.
Again, this sort of lifestyle change, rather than goal setting, give flexibility to begin when it suits and to do more ‘good things’ than you were before.
Change the trajectory of your own health.

During January the weekly summary showed I was achieving 80% to 86% of achieving all of these things every day.

Once I would have focused on the 15% short-fall from fully achieving everything.
Now I'm seeing the benefits of the extra things I’m doing, and that is the focus.
It is easier to pick things up off the floor already, weight is dropping off where it needs to (I didn't even take weight measurements for this, just let the results speak for themselves)

When we went on our road trip to Sydney I marked out ‘Sydney trip' on the Excel sheet and didn’t worry about anything.

The flexibility of lifestyle shift as opposed to goal focus is quite liberating.

If this interests you, then you can just to do your own review of the things you would like to work on for yourself or like to improve personally.
I do drink alcohol, but not a lot, so I don’t feel the need to set any goals in that area.
This is the sort of thing you need to be honest with yourself about.
Not smoking, or using ‘substances’, myself means that is not an area of concern.
Using Herbal.life products means I don't need to worry about nutritional factors as they are already covered.
You will need to ponder what changes you would like to make to improve your own long term health and wellness.

One final comment.
An old friend, very successful in business and deeply involved with personal motivation, once told me that the secret to sustained good health is to set your goals and move forward, one month at a time.
If the month has gone well then celebrate it and then start afresh with the new month.
If not, then review and just reset your plans.
By recommitting to your plans at the start of each month then any slip-ups, or failures, from the previous month are no longer relevant and you start new each month.

I find that works for me, hopefully some of the things we bring you in this news letter will have some value for you.

Healthy Smoothie Recipes Perfect to use with our convenient protein powder supplement to optimize your health!

BLACK AND BLUE BOMBER
1/4 cups blueberries
1/4 cups blackberries
1 banana
1/2 cups apple juice
1/3 cups raspberry sorbet
Put all ingredients into blender. Blend until smoothie consistency is reached!

BLACKBERRY SMOOTHIE
3/4 cups apple juice
1/2 cups plain yogurt
1 1/2 cups frozen blackberries
1 banana
Pour liquid ingredients into the blender first. Yogurt is a liquid ingredient. All fruit goes into blender at one time. Put cover on and blend until smooth.

CAPPUCCINO SMOOTHIE
2 cups brewed double strength coffee
1 pint coffee ice cream
6 cups ice
1 1/2 cups milk
Whipped cream, if desired
Cinnamon for garnish
Place coffee, ice cream, ice and milk in blender. Mix until smooth. Top with whipped cream and cinnamon.

CITRUS COOLER
6 1/2 cups ruby red or pink grapefruit juice, divided
2 cups pineapple juice
1 (6 ounces) can frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed and undiluted
2 cups lime‐flavored sparkling mineral water, chilled
Garnish: lime slices
Pour 2 1/2 cups grapefruit juice into ice trays, filling 28 sections, freeze. Combine remaining 4 cups grapefruit juice, pineapple juice, and orange juice concentrate, stir well.
Cover and chill at least 3 hours. Stir in mineral water just before serving.
Place 3 frozen grapefruit juice cubes in each of 9 glasses, fill each fruit juice mixture.
Garnish, if desired. Serve immediately.

If you eat much sugar now, you’ll want to take this step slowly because sugar is addictive.

Following these strategies will help you reduce the amount of sugar and processed foods you eat:

1. Read labels.

There are processed foods that are healthier and have less sugar. Although your goal is to cut them out completely from your diet, you can start by focusing on healthier versions of processed foods.

Most importantly, eliminate all processed foods that have artificial sugars or trans fats.

2. Learn the different names for sugar.

Sugar can hide under many different names on labels. There are more than 60 different names for sugar used by food manufacturers.

Although you may not be able to remember all of them, you can focus on the most common ones and memorize them.

Sugar is also called sucrose, corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, corn sweetener, barley malt, maltose, dextrose, cane crystals, cane sugar, fructose, maltodextrin and other names.

3. Designate several days a week to eat without processed foods.

Similar to meatless Mondays or vegetarian Wednesdays, you can create no-processed food Saturdays or Sundays.

This will help you decrease your dependence on processed foods.

There are also other benefits of these no-processed food days: By setting aside days to be free from all processed foods, you’ll also learn to cook from scratch. Plus, you’ll find that you’re planning healthier meals.

4. Remember the power of sugar.

Processed food is filled with sugar to influence your taste buds. The reason why manufacturers put sugar in processed foods is that they know it’s addictive and powerful.

It won’t be easy to get rid of the sugar in your diet all at once. However, you can slowly detox from it.

Sugar doesn’t just hurt your waistline. Too much sugar can negatively affect your brain, mood, and happiness.

One of the first steps to emotional wellbeing with food is to cut out or reduce processed foods.

The high levels of sugar can hurt your brain and affect your mood in a negative and substantial way.

Focus on Plant Foods

Once you’ve started to eliminate or reduce processed foods, you’ll have more room in your diet for plant foods.

Research shows that a plant-based diet can heighten brain function and uplift your mood.

A plant-based diet also provides your brain with more nutrients such as minerals and vitamins, so you’re able to function at the highest levels and find happiness.

What is EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing - Psychotherapy Treatment?

Its purpose is one that’s intended to relieve stress and other negative feelings that can be caused by traumatic memories.

This can be living through a traumatic event yourself or witnessing it happen to someone else.

There are three different parts to the EMDR therapy that can be a help to people.

The first part is dealing with the events and memories that are responsible for the emotional problems you’ve been experiencing.

In this first part of dealing with the events, you’ll learn how to create new links that you can associate with the events and memories.

EMDR therapy works in that it can have you feeling safe and in control in your environment rather than afraid and feeling like the world is not a safe place for you to be in.

The second part that can help people who use EMDR techniques is targeting the present situations that might provoke your distress.

During the sessions, while you’re going through the phases, you’ll be doing work designed to desensitize any external and internal triggers you may have.

Many people have certain triggers that will cause them to feel as powerless and scared as they were at the time the actual event took place.

The person can feel like he or she is actual back in the event or seeing it again.

EMDR can help you overcome the emotions and issues that are connected with that. The third part involves using imagery.

What Problems Can Be Helped by EMDR?

There are several problems and symptoms that can be handled by using the teachings of EMDR.

Extremely traumatic events such as sexual and physical abuse can be successfully treated.

Rape victims can find relief from the traumatic memories through the techniques offered. Child traumas can also be treated by using EMDR.

Experiencing the death of a loved one can be difficult.

Changes to Repair Your Mental Health For Better Sleep.

There isn't a lot involved to making changes that can help you cure insomnia and get your energy back. What you don't want to do is to live in such a way that you're sabotaging your own restoration process.

By now, you've seen and heard all of the ads and warnings about lifestyle habits that aren't good for your body. But what you might not know is some habits aren't just bad for your physical health.

They can interfere with your mental health, too and cause you to have a lack of energy. Smoking is the first change you can make. This habit can cause you to feel depression due to the nicotine in the cigarettes.

It can be harder to regain your mental health if you're using a substance that fights you during your journey. Drinking is the next change. Consuming too much alcohol can cause both anxiety and depression.

The alcohol can also interrupt your sleep and can lead to insomnia. The third change you can make to help get your mental health back on track to eradicate insomnia and energy drain is to make sure that what you're eating isn't contributing to low energy.

There are foods that can help give you energy and foods that can diminish it. Your sleeping habits are the fourth thing you'll want to fix. If you allow it, your bedroom can become a haven for anxiety, causing distractions that can rob you of peaceful rest and lead to insomnia.

Refuse to think about or dwell on anything that stirs you up emotionally before it's time to sleep. You'll have a more difficult time turning your mind off once it starts thinking about any issues that troubles you.

The final change you can make that will help you get your energy back is to make sure that you're not living a sedentary lifestyle. You might not be able to help it if you have the kind of job that requires a lot of sitting, but you can make sure that when you're not working, you have some form of physical activity that you regularly engage in.

Besides physical exercise, you can do some things mentally that can help you prevent the mental demand that can lead to insomnia. You can make sure that you don't allow yourself to reach the point where you're overwhelmed by your life.

When you become aware of any kind of energy drain, you can take care of it immediately before it becomes overwhelming. Awareness is key to your improved energy levels.
