Hasn’t 2024 been fascinating??

Maybe I’m a little early in seeing the year off but this is our last newsletter for the year, so it seems fair.

Politics, and war, and extreme weather events.
Major things just keep happening.
When I was younger, I could look at what was occurring ‘out there’ and predict what I thought the outcomes would be but, now I’m older, current events seem to make less and less sense.

I’m finding that I need to focus on things around me: family, work, local events……. People in my life.

As we are approaching End of Year we approach the time when many of us ‘take stock’ of things in our lives.

I do that as well.
It is a little different this year from other years.
Middle of the year my wife and I took over a businesses in our town.
New to us but very established.
At our time of life there is no need to do that but it looked interesting and we were made an offer we could not refuse.
You’ve probably heard that story before!

It seems to have become a bit of a passion project for us.
Very interesting, meeting lots of people, building many new relationships.
If it was not ‘business’ I guess you could call it fun.

The other side of the coin is that it takes a lot of time.
There was a lot going on in our lives with some elderly bereavements and with new grandbabies on the other end of the age spectrum.
It was a bit of a juggle, and a serious learning curve, for a few months but it is all stable now and going well.

I mention this as there is only so much I can fit into my time and my energy levels, and so I was postponing gym time and then discontinued training . . . for a while.

I was finding that I did not have time for proper long walks with my dog in the morning.

I have not looked but I think I have probably put on 5 kilos since starting this new project.

Using Herbal.life shakes and nutrition tablets every day still underpins general health and wellness but, more food and less exercise, that has consequences.

Christmas is coming up quickly. We had our first Christmas Get Together on the weekend and there are more to come.
Worrying about fitness and weight control over this next period seems to be a little counter productive to me, but it seems a good time to set the attitudes for getting into the New Year with some focus.

Normal healthy weight loss results to aim for is around 1 kg a week.
If I start using my Herbal.life as a weight loss program then I can correct the weight situation by early February.

That seems to make sense.
We are now stable enough in the new business to recommence gym sessions but . . . why would you begin that again when you are heading into the Christmas/New Year period???

Now seems like a good time to plan for the new year: Shakes and tabs, back in the gym, walking a few kilometres each morning with our Labrador.
That is all that will be needed to get overall fitness and weight back to a more comfortable level.

It also means that the next month can be enjoyed without worrying about things because the plan is in place for the New Year.

I don’t know if you work with similar processes. I just thought you might be interested to have someone else saying that things are a little off track currently. Life is busy. But, it is all good in the end and the solutions are at hand.

With that thought in mind I wish you a bountiful and happy Christmas and New Year.

Maintaining the health of your brain and body is not only important for you but also for your family and friends.

4) Prepare for the future. When you retire from your job, have an alternative social structure ready to keep you stimulated and challenged. Margaret Mead, the well-known anthropologist, said:

"If you associate enough with older people who do enjoy their lives, who are not stored away in any golden ghettos, you will gain a sense of continuity and of the possibility for a full life".

Avoid becoming isolated and lonely!

5) Feed your head. As we get older it becomes even more important that we endeavor to keep our antioxidants and the hormones of youth optimal, while keeping the hormones of age, insulin and cortisol, under control.

FRUITY SUNFLOWER SMOOTHIE
1/3 20ounces bag frozen strawberries
1 banana
1/2 15ounces can pineapple (including juice), or several slices of fresh pineapple
3 tablespoons low‐fat plain yogurt
2 tablespoons unsalted sunflower seeds
6 ounces orange juice
Blend for about 30 seconds, then serve.

GINGERROOT SMOOTHIE
1 apple, cored, peeled, and sliced
1 lemon, peeled and seeded
1/2 cups filtered water
1/2 cups ice
1 (2‐inch) piece fresh gingerroot, peeled and crushed

Natural Beauty Recipe

Honey Lip Balm
Number Of Applications : 100
Preparation Time : 0:15
2 Tablespoons olive oil
1/2 teaspoon honey
3/4 teaspoon beeswax -- grated
1/2 teaspoon cocoa butter
flavored oil of your choice -- to taste
1 vitamin E capsule
-In a small saucepan, melt oil, honey, wax and butter over low heat.
-Remove from heat and allow to cool for 2 to 3 minutes.
-Stir in flavoring and contents of vitamin E capsule.
-Pour into container(s) of your choice.

Lip Gloss
~~~~~~~~
Ingredients:
2 tsp. beeswax
7 tsp. castor oil or Jojoba or sweet almond oil
1 tsp. honey
5 drops of an essential oil such as lemon, peppermint, orange, lime, tangerine

Melt the oil and beeswax together in a little pan over low heat until the beeswax is melted. Take off the stove and then add in your honey and whisk it all together.

When the mixture is nearly cool add in your essential oil, mix it up again and then pour into your lip balm container. Since this comes out to be more like a gloss you can always add more beeswax to it so that it is a little harder. Maybe another 1/2 tsp. would do it.

Having a personality disorder is more than occasionally having a bad day, it’s a continued pattern of behaviors and thoughts that affect someone’s daily life.

It’s believed that around 1.6% of the population has borderline personality disorder, but this number may be higher.

People with borderline personality disorder are often diagnosed with other disorders which makes determining the real number difficult.

Others have borderline personality disorder but have never had clinical help or any mental health diagnosis at all.

Some of the Signs and Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder

While all personality disorders affect a person’s behavior and thought patterns, some key characteristics set borderline personality disorder apart from other personality disorders.

In this section, we will first cover the diagnostic criteria that clinical professionals use for borderline personality disorder.

Then, we will discuss in layman's terms what it is like to live with borderline personality disorder.

Markers of a Personality Disorder in the DSM-5

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders 5th Edition (DSM-5) is a manual published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) to help mental health experts accurately diagnose mental health disorders.

According to the DSM-5, in order for someone to be diagnosed with a personality disorder, there are a few criteria markers. Taken straight from the DSM-5 are the markers for a personality disorder:

● Significant impairments in self (identity or self-direction) and interpersonal (empathy or intimacy) functioning.
● One or more pathological personality trait domains or trait facets.
● The impairments in personality functioning and the individual’s personality trait expression are relatively stable across time and consistent across situations.
● The impairments in personality functioning and the individual’s personality trait expression are not better understood as normative for the individual’s developmental stage or socio-cultural environment.
● The impairments in personality functioning and the individual’s personality trait expression are not solely due to the direct physiological effects of a substance (e.g., a drug of abuse, medication) or a general medical condition (e.g., severe head trauma).

To put it more simply, to be diagnosed with a personality disorder, it has to be a significant impairment, it has to be a pathological personality trait, and it has to be (relatively) consistent in different areas of life.

Markers of Borderline Personality Disorder in the DSM-5

The DSM-5 also shares the exact criteria needed for diagnosing borderline personality disorder (BPD). While it may share some of the same criteria as other personality disorders, it is distinct in certain ways as well.

Directly from the DSM-5, the criteria for Borderline Personality Disorder are:

A. Significant impairments in personality functioning manifest by:

1. Impairments in self-functioning (a or b):
a. Identity: Markedly impoverished, poorly developed, or unstable self-image, often associated with excessive self-criticism; chronic feelings of emptiness; dissociative states under stress.

What is EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing - Psychotherapy Treatment?

Its purpose is one that’s intended to relieve stress and other negative feelings that can be caused by traumatic memories.

This can be living through a traumatic event yourself or witnessing it happen to someone else.

There are three different parts to the EMDR therapy that can be a help to people.

The first part is dealing with the events and memories that are responsible for the emotional problems you’ve been experiencing.

In this first part of dealing with the events, you’ll learn how to create new links that you can associate with the events and memories.

EMDR therapy works in that it can have you feeling safe and in control in your environment rather than afraid and feeling like the world is not a safe place for you to be in.

The second part that can help people who use EMDR techniques is targeting the present situations that might provoke your distress.

During the sessions, while you’re going through the phases, you’ll be doing work designed to desensitize any external and internal triggers you may have.

Many people have certain triggers that will cause them to feel as powerless and scared as they were at the time the actual event took place.

The person can feel like he or she is actual back in the event or seeing it again.

EMDR can help you overcome the emotions and issues that are connected with that. The third part involves using imagery.

What Problems Can Be Helped by EMDR?

There are several problems and symptoms that can be handled by using the teachings of EMDR.

Extremely traumatic events such as sexual and physical abuse can be successfully treated.

Rape victims can find relief from the traumatic memories through the techniques offered. Child traumas can also be treated by using EMDR.

Experiencing the death of a loved one can be difficult.

Not everyone grieves in the same manner.

Losing someone that you care about can be a traumatic event that can cause people to become stuck.

EMDR can also help you overcome the trauma of losing someone that you love.

There are other traumatic events that can require the need for a treatment like EMDR.

If you witness a terrible trauma or the abuse of someone else, it can affect you emotionally.

Eating For A Healthy Heart

Bad cholesterol or a bad diet is something we all experience at some point in time. It's impossible to eat healthy our whole lives, even though we may try hard to do it. Eating healthy for your heart is something everyone should try to do, especially when it comes to restoring health and reducing heart attacks.

Your heart and food

We know these things for sure - a diet high in saturated fats will help raise your cholesterol, which is a risk factor for heart disease. People that are obese are more prone to heart disease. A diet high in sodium may elevate your blood pressure, leading to inflammation and even heart disease.

To help prevent heart disease and improve your health, put the tips below to good use.

Eat plenty of fish

Herring, sardines, and salmon are all excellent sources of Omega 3 essential fatty acids. Other fish are great to, although Omega 3 may help to get your cholesterol down to a healthier level.

Choosing healthy fats and oils

Saturated fat will increase the risk of heart disease. It's found in meat, butter, and even coconut oil. You should avoid them until your cholesterol levels are down and you are at a healthy weight. Even those that love red meats can enjoy seafood and nuts for their main sources of protein.

Monounsaturated fats such as olive oils will help you to protect your heart. Olive oil is an ideal choice for cooking, dressing, or even as a dipping sauce.

Plenty of fiber

Fiber can help you control your cholesterol. You can find fiber in whole grain products to help control sugar absorption as well, which will help you keep your digestive system healthy.

Choosing carbohydrates

Eating for your heart involves staying away from sugary foods such as candy, cookies, cakes, and pastries. Eating a lot of sugar isn't good for your heart disease at all. Healthy carbohydrates involve whole grain breads, whole grain pasta, brown rice, and a lot of vegetables. You should make fruits and vegetables the main aspect of your diet.

Healthy cooking methods

Stir frying and sautéing with olive oil or canola oil are both great methods, as you shouldn't dip your food in batter and fry it anymore. If you cook chicken, remove the skin and bake it in the oven in foil.

Instead of frying your fish you should always bake it. Steaming your vegetables can help maintain the most nutrients. You should use cream sauces or lots of butter anymore either. When you eat vegetables, try squeezing lemon juice on them or using your favorite seasonings.

As you make the proper changes to your diet, keep in mind that it takes time for them to become habits. Eating healthy is always great for your body and your lifestyle, especially when it comes to your heart and the prevention of heart disease.
