Hi,

Today we are on a more serious note than usual.
We are beginning to look at chronic disease.

Today is mainly an overview of the underlying factors that lead to incidence of chronic diseases in the general population.

Serious health issues are totally personal.
Finding out that you, or your loved ones, have a chronic disease is a harrowing experience.
Sometimes it is manageable, but to management it can mean a total disruption to lifestyle and many changes are normally required to manage a chronic condition.

Other times it is deeply serious and there may not many options to deal with it.
That can be harsh.

Today we just touch on this with a look at how many people have chronic diseases on the factors that could indicate risk of contracting such conditions.

Sometimes there are genetic factors working against us so we need to be vigilant for any signs of problems developing.
That can be very unfair, but life has a way of being unfair at times so we need to understand out own situation.

More often there are factors which we can control that have a big influence on our chance of developing a chronic health issue.

Today we are not talking about how to deal with news of chronic problems as much as looking at how our lifestyle choices can have a direct impact on health in later life.

I keep 'banging on' about adding nutrition shakes and high quality supplements to lifestyle when you are fit and health.
This initial review will hopefully get people thinking about how current actions and their long term consequences.

Healthy Smoothie Recipes Perfect to use with our convenient protein powder supplement to optimize your health!

SUMMER SMOOTHIE
1 envelope unflavored gelatin
1 cup orange juice, divided
6 strawberries, washed and hulled
1 ripe banana
1 cup vanilla frozen yogurt
6 large ice cubes
Additional strawberries and orange slices, for garnish sprinkle gelatin over 1/4 cups orange juice in saucepan, let stand 1 minute.

Over low heat, stir until gelatin completely dissolves, about 2 minutes. Blend remaining orange juice, strawberries, banana and vanilla yogurt in blender at high speed until smooth. Add gelatin mixture, process until blended.

Add ice cubes, process at high speed until smooth and frosty. Garnish with additional strawberries and orange slices. Serve immediately.

SWEET POTATO SMOOTHIE
2 medium‐size sweet potatoes (about 2 cup)
1 tablespoons brown rice syrup
1 tablespoon sucanat
1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoons butterscotch flavoring
2 to 2 1/2 cups water
2 ice cubes (opt. )
2 teaspoons sesame tahini (ethnic food department)
Bake sweet potatoes until tender. Let cool (in refrigerator when not too warm). Peel skins sweeteners and flavorings.
Begin blending. After several seconds of blending, stop the unit and mix the ingredients, if necessary, using a long utensil.
Reblend to a creamy consistency. Serve warm or chilled.

TANGERINE DREAMS SMOOTHIE
1 cup tangerine juice
2 ripe bananas
1 ripe papaya, seeded, skin removed and diced
Blend all ingredients and serve.

Natural Beauty Recipe


Homemade Hair Spray

Chop one lemon (or an orange for dry hair).
Place in a pot with 2 cups water.
Boil until half of the initial amount remains. Cool, strain, and place in a spray bottle.
Store in the refrigerator.
If it is too sticky, add more water.
Add one ounce rubbing alcohol as a preservative and then the spray can be stored for up to two weeks unrefrigerated.

Homemade Hair Gel
Ingredients:
1/2 to 1 teaspoon unflavored gelatin
1 cup warm water
Directions:
Dissolve gelatin in 1 cup warm water. Keep refrigerated and use as you would a purchased gel.

Hair Mousse
Dissolve 1/4 teaspoon plain gelatin in 1 cup boiling water. Let sit at room temperature until slightly set.
Rub into dry or wet hair, and blow dry.

Dandruff Remover
Ingredients:
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup white vinegar
Directions:
Combine ingredients then apply directly to the scalp. Use before shampooing. Apply twice a week.

What is Chronic Disease?

A Guide to Chronic Disease: What It Is, How It Affects People, and How to Manage Types of Chronic Disease

Chronic disease is often defined as a disease or condition that negatively affects someone’s life and lasts three months or longer.

The CDC states that a condition isn’t considered chronic until it lasts one year or longer.

Many chronic diseases are not curable, but symptoms can be managed with medication, therapy, and lifestyle changes.

For some chronic diseases like Alzheimer's or multiple sclerosis, the symptoms can get worse over time.

A person 65 years or older has an 80% chance of developing a chronic disease.

The National Council on Aging writes, “Age, family genetics, and gender make it nearly impossible for older adults to avoid becoming a chronic disease statistic.

Eighty percent of adults 65 and older have at least one condition, while 68% have two or more.”

The most common chronic diseases are:

● Heart disease

● Diabetes

● Cancer

● Asthma

Chronic disease doesn’t only affect aging populations, although they are the most at risk. Many children and young adults suffer from chronic illnesses.

What Are Common Risk Factors for Chronic Disease?

Many factors can cause someone to have a chronic disease.

Many experts believe that the most common risk factors include tobacco use, poor nutrition, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol use, genetics, and family history.

Other less obvious risk factors include education, income level, race, gender, and poor mental health.

People with one chronic disease are also more likely to develop additional chronic diseases.

We’ll look closer at each type of risk factor and why they might lead to chronic disease.

Poor Nutrition and Chronic Disease

Poor nutrition is also a major contributing risk factor for chronic disease. The CDC states:

Most people in the United States don’t eat a healthy diet and consume too much sodium, saturated fat, and sugar, increasing their risk of chronic diseases.

For example, fewer than 1 in 10 adolescents and adults eat enough fruits or vegetables.

In addition, 6 in 10 young people aged 2 to 19 years and 5 in 10 adults consume at least one sugary drink on any given day.

The University of Adelaide in Australia shares its findings on nutrition and chronic disease:

International research involving the University of Adelaide has shown for the first time that poor nutrition - including a lack of fruit, vegetables and whole grains - is associated with the development of multiple chronic diseases over time.

Other diet risks might include a diet high in meat and low in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Another commonly listed diet choice is processed foods, foods high in fat, and trans fat.

Low Income and Chronic Disease

There is a correlation between low income and chronic disease.

A study released by JAMA Network Open in 2020 revealed:

Findings of this study suggest that substantial and increasing disparities in cardiovascular disease prevalence exist in the United States between people in the highest-resources group and the remainder of the population.”

Meaning individuals with higher incomes and resources were less likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease than those who live on lower incomes and have fewer resources.

Healthy People, a federal government program tasked with improving the health of Americans, writes, “Some population groups living in poverty may have more adverse health outcomes than others.

For example, the risk for chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity is higher among those with the lowest income and education levels.”

Poverty and the risk of chronic illness also affect children. In The Nation’s Health, the author writes:

"The health risks associated with childhood poverty range from higher infant mortality risks to inadequate nutrition to a higher incidence of chronic disease, all of which contribute to a child’s school readiness, opportunity to learn and future health trajectory.

For example, children living in low-income families are more than twice as likely to have asthma, a major contributor to school absenteeism, than children in higher-income families."

Sometimes Chronic Disease Is Inevitable or the Cause Is Unknown

It would be a mistake to imply that all chronic diseases are a product of lifestyle. Many people live otherwise healthy, active lives who also live with or develop a chronic disease.

People who exercise, eat healthy meals, limit stress, and care for their health may still have a chronic disease.

Cancer, for example, is proven to exist in many cases, even in a healthy lifestyle. ABC News writes:

About two-thirds of the genetic mutations that lead to cancer happen simply because of random errors made as cells divide and not because of diet, chemicals or inherited genes, the team at Johns Hopkins University said.

It may be a combination of genetics and the environment, but experts don’t know the exact reason why these chronic diseases exist.

What is EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing - Psychotherapy Treatment?

Its purpose is one that’s intended to relieve stress and other negative feelings that can be caused by traumatic memories.

This can be living through a traumatic event yourself or witnessing it happen to someone else.

There are three different parts to the EMDR therapy that can be a help to people.

The first part is dealing with the events and memories that are responsible for the emotional problems you’ve been experiencing.

In this first part of dealing with the events, you’ll learn how to create new links that you can associate with the events and memories.

EMDR therapy works in that it can have you feeling safe and in control in your environment rather than afraid and feeling like the world is not a safe place for you to be in.

The second part that can help people who use EMDR techniques is targeting the present situations that might provoke your distress.

During the sessions, while you’re going through the phases, you’ll be doing work designed to desensitize any external and internal triggers you may have.

Many people have certain triggers that will cause them to feel as powerless and scared as they were at the time the actual event took place.

The person can feel like he or she is actual back in the event or seeing it again.

EMDR can help you overcome the emotions and issues that are connected with that. The third part involves using imagery.

What Problems Can Be Helped by EMDR?

There are several problems and symptoms that can be handled by using the teachings of EMDR.

Extremely traumatic events such as sexual and physical abuse can be successfully treated.

Rape victims can find relief from the traumatic memories through the techniques offered. Child traumas can also be treated by using EMDR.

Experiencing the death of a loved one can be difficult.

Not everyone grieves in the same manner.

Losing someone that you care about can be a traumatic event that can cause people to become stuck.

Simple Tricks to Beat Brain Fog

Depending on how severe it is, brain fog can have a severe impact on your life, causing issues with productivity and focus.

What Does Brain Fog Feel Like?

Because there isn’t a lot of research available about this condition and where it comes from, it’s difficult to know the difference between brain fog and standard mental exhaustion.

The symptoms you have when you’re suffering from a foggy mind can differ depending on the situation. If your fog is caused by anxiety, you might feel overwhelmed or notice an irregular heartbeat.

If you’re dealing with the problem as a result of standard mental fatigue, you can expect symptoms like:

● Lack of focus
● Poor problem-solving skills
● Forgetfulness
● Issues dealing with simple tasks

How to Reduce Brain Fog: 3 Simple Steps

Even if you’re not sure if brain fog is the real issue behind your problems, there are steps you can take to try to combat it.

There aren’t any medications for this cognitive issue, though you should probably consider speaking to a doctor if your fogginess persists.

For the most part, reducing brain fog is about looking after your mental health and brain. Three of the most important steps you can take are:

1. Reduce Anxiety And Stress

Anxiety is one of the most common causes of brain fog. Dealing with constant worry and stress places additional pressure on your brain, which can make it harder to focus.

Anxiety essentially places the body in fight or flight mode, where you’re constantly dealing with higher cortisol and adrenaline levels.

Another significant factor in the development of brain fog is exhaustion. When you’re not getting enough sleep, your mind can’t function as it's supposed to.

During sleep, your brain doesn’t just shut down, it goes through an important detoxification and renewal process. It clears away toxins and makes sure you’re capable of managing common sources of stress.

Studies suggest disrupted sleep causes problems with our brain cells’ ability to communicate, leading to poor cognition and memory.

Make sure you get a good night’s sleep by reducing your exposure to caffeine, dimming bright lights during the early evening, and using blackout curtains/blinds.

It’s also worth establishing a consistent schedule for when you sleep and rise each day. Getting into a routine can make it easier for your body to naturally get the right amount of rest.

3. Update Your Diet And Exercise

Nutrient deficiencies are another issue sometimes linked to brain fog. To work at its best, your brain needs adequate amounts of nutrients on a daily basis.

This means you need to ensure you’re getting plenty of vitamins and minerals in your diet.

Eating a balanced diet with lots of whole foods ensures you get the nutrients and vitamins that support healthy brain function.
