There’s a saying that goes, “Sometimes the worst place to be is in your own head.” Never has there been any time in history when this quote has been truer.
Statistics show that mental health issues are at an all time high. Despite the advent of technology and daily conveniences in our lives, as a society we’re more frazzled than ever before.
Stress is at an all-time high. Deadlines, financial stress, politics, the never-ending onslaught of bad news blaring on news networks and other triggers are adversely affecting millions daily.
Sooner or later something has got to give… and it has. Millions of people are suffering from mental health problems and require help from a system that’s letting them slip through the cracks without a safety net to rescue them.
It’s unfortunate and you’re the best person to look out for yourself. Prevention is better than cure.
The best way to prevent yourself from becoming a victim to the pressures of society will be to adopt a few self-care measures to protect your mind from the noisy world that’s designed to drive you to insanity.
Below you’ll find a list of simple measures that you can adopt to barricade your mind and protect it from the media and madness that’s all around us today.
1. Steer clear of toxic people
This is the MOST important tip of the lot. More people suffer mental stress because of the words and actions of other people than any other cause. With the popularity of social media, this problem has escalated out of control.
It’s very common to see people ranting and raving at strangers on social media platforms over trivial issues. Politics, crime, world events, etc. are all triggers for unnecessary debate.
If you want peace of mind, your best bet is to avoid toxic people in your personal life and hate-filled
people on social media platforms. It’s not your battle to make everyone else agree with you. This is a surefire route to aggravation and mental stress. Stay above it.
2. Take time to be in quiet solitude
You may choose to meditate, or sit in a park and watch the world go by, or go to the beach and watch the waves lapping on the shore. Take time to be alone and learn to quiet your thoughts. Doing this will recharge your mind and soul.
We live in a world where people constantly need to be stimulated. They live off the constant dopamine hits that social media notifications and other stimuli provide.
They thrive on ‘noise’ and something has to always be going on for them to feel secure and alive. They have a fear of missing out and don’t even realize it.
Avoid this constant drain on your mental energy. Music is the space between the notes.
3. Learn to say no
This is especially
true at the workplace. If you have the time to assist someone, then by all means help out. But if you’re already overburdened by work that’s threatening to put you in a mental institution, you have to learn to say no if others try to get you to share their workload.
Learn to say no to telemarketers, sales people, invitations to social events, etc. The rule of thumb is that if you don’t feel like it, just say no to it. Period
4. Journaling
Despite your best efforts to stay calm and collected, life happens to all of us and you may find stressful events threatening your peace. Journaling is a fantastic way to release stress without having to talk to anyone.
The act of writing your thoughts out on paper is cathartic. If you’re angry or annoyed with someone, write it all down. Channel your feelings into your journaling and you’ll feel much better when you’re done.
5. Break the curse of monotony
Monotony saps your life energy and drains your soul. While some monotony in life is to be expected, the constant grind can wear you down.
It’s imperative that you add some change and excitement in your life to wake you up. Try something you’ve always wanted to do. Challenge yourself. Pick up a new hobby. Visit a place you’ve never been to before. Be spontaneous and open to new experiences.
There’s a reason people usually feel happy on a vacation. The change of scenery breaks the monotony. Variety is the spice of life. Use it to stay happy and protect your mental health.
The 5 tips in this article are very powerful if applied consistently. Protect your headspace and don’t allow the negative energy in the world to shape your thoughts or dictate your emotions. Guard your mind and you’ll be mentally and emotionally strong.

Daily Affirmations to Choke Out Depression
Now you have to adopt a new routine - and in order to do that you must first recognize that it takes awhile. You have to learn new habits and rewrite over old ones.
Don't feel down if you forget in the moment how to do it. Pick it up as soon as you realize it and move on. Over time, it will become second nature for you to live this way and you won't have to try so hard or think about it as much - it will come naturally.
For the next 2 weeks, stay very aware of your present mindset. That doesn't mean look back at the end of the day about how you felt. It means check in with yourself every half hour before too much time passes and see how you're feeling.
You don't have to waste time writing some big journal entry about it - just do a self check. "How am I feeling right now in this second?"
If the answer is
anything less than content, then pinpoint it. "What's making me feel anxious or sad or angry?"
When you know what it is, you want to do two things - first, implement a new mindset about it. If you're feeling depressed because you're in a job that you can't stand, then repeat an affirmation that the law of attraction uses to write over your old mindset.
You don't want to go through your day chained to negative feelings about your job - you want to focus on making a better life. So you'll say something like, "I am happy that I'm working on achieving my goal of becoming a ... (and fill in the blank with whatever position it is you do want)."
Words alone aren't enough. We'll talk about action steps in a moment. Many LOA followers also use daily affirmations to uplift themselves. They would add on to that previous message and say something such as, "I am pleased that I love and honor myself enough to work toward a career of my choosing."
You
might feel like this is unnatural in the beginning. You might even feel like it's awkward. But your subconscious mind ingrains this message - whether you are actively thinking in a positive manner or a negative one, so continue doing the exercise regardless of how well you believe it will work at first.
You're teaching yourself to quit feeling bad and start looking at the good part of what's happening at that very moment. Using daily affirmations in the moment, or before bed and right when you wake up, is a great way to choke out depression for good.
Consider them akin to St Augustine grass. That is a hearty grass that, when thriving, will choke out weeds in a lawn, refusing to allow them to grow and infiltrate the plot of land.
You're doing the same. When your mind is focused on positive thoughts as often as possible, there's simply no room for anything else. There's no possibility for depression to take root because happiness is too strong and
too plentiful in your life at that time.
If you want to be more logical than simply ignoring the negative and replacing it with positive, then you can do that, too. You can say, "It's understandable that I'm unhappy with this career, but I'm so proud of myself for working on a big change." And then make that change!
When you use affirmations, always speak or think in the present, never the future. Don't say, "I will try to get another job." That's defeatist at best. You want to say, "I am getting a new career." You are! You're actively and currently working on steps to allow you to give your boss a pink slip.
Action Steps That Refuse to Let Depression Resurface
The most important part of the law of attraction is when you start living life as if you already have what you want. That means every action you take is that of a happy person, not someone mired in depression.
Would a happy person crawl up into a ball on their
couch and cry for hours because they hate their job? No.
A happy person would actively take steps to change their life. And that's what you have to do. You'll feel good when you're making changes. If things are simply staying the same, you'll see no light at the end of the tunnel and you'll feel hopeless about your future.
If you start picturing yourself at the same work desk with the same coworkers 10, 15 or 20 years later, stop yourself and picture yourself in a new job surrounded by the exact kind of people you enjoy.
Then go to work on making that come true. What would someone who is happy in his or her career be doing? They would be growing their expertise. You could sign up for classes, take on tasks for free that give you experience - research - there are tons of options for you.
You are going to be looking into who you want to work for (and why). You are going to be researching the company and what they're looking for so that
you can possess many of those qualities they're looking for.
Make a plan of action and then use your mind and action steps to go from a state of depression to a state of utmost happiness because your life is morphing into exactly what you want it to be.

Hi,
I hope all is well with you.
Over the last couple of months I have commented about supporting my mum after her strokes and sleeping up at the aged care facility where she lives. They are big rooms with a bedroom and a lounge so there is space for a little fold up bed.
Having family with her 24/7 is making a big difference to her. Slowly she is slipping but she has stayed mentally engaged with us.
My wife comes in during the day and I get 7 or 8 hours a day to get home, shower and change, take by labrador, Topaz, out to the bush for his run (his is a good dog these days but there is a picture of him as a puppy below), and to get down to my office to work.
We've been doing this for 13 weeks now.
It feels like there is a lot of the things we covered today at play here. Of course you support family, that is not a question. Being able to step back a little and understanding the bigger picture is another thing.
There will come a day when mum is not here. When that happens you will have to ask yourself: "did I do all I could do?" and if the answer to that is yes then things are okay.
Taking a little time out in the forest with my dog, getting back to the gym 2 times a week and doing intense sessions, having work that can be done at my office but also work I can do on my computer sitting in a chair in aged care during the night, all these things are keeping life working.
Circumstances change but if there is a positive attitude at play then it is all feels like a journey and not an imposition.
I find it interesting with the article to see the same principals having impact on my own life at this time.
