Hi,

I hope this new month finds you well.

We are in the middle of Summer here, a year forecast to be very dry and very hot. Bushfire weather.
Instead, we have warm days, with very few hot ones, and regular rain.
Our lawns are looking better than I can every remember them!
People talked about changing weather with the global warming for so many years but it appears to be with us now.
Interesting times.

We still have our ’GrandDog’ with us, the 2 ½ year old Rottweiler, Junior.
I’m still getting up early, having a Herbal.Life nutrition shake, and then we walk the 2 dogs each day.
10,000 steps before morning coffee.

I think this is doing good things for fitness and body shape but I made the commitment to myself to do the walking (and to not buy any chocolate) for 90 days and then review outcomes. I’ll check out weight etc at the end of February.

In our newsletter we talk about realistic changes in what we do every day then and keeping with them over time.
If we talk about that I need to do it myself as well, so …..

I’ve been using Herbal.Life products for over 30 years now.
For both my wife and for myself, getting up in the morning, having a shake and nutrition tabs, and then getting on with the day is just a natural thing to do.
Once we have been out walking, we may have some breakfast, but it is only an occasional thing for me on quiet days.

Having the broad spectrum nutrition sorted first thing every day gives a comfort as we get older and as friends and associates keep having health problems and even chronic health issues. Good nutrition and regular exercise does not guarantee wellness and healthy aging but we do what we can.

With the dogs, the Rottie, Junior, is a nice dog, very handsome, but also very boisterous.
We walk them in the bushland so they can run work off their energy.
They get to spend some time in a dam every day to just splash around.

Often in the afternoon I take our old Labrador (Topaz) up to the local aged care facility here in town.
My father in law and his wife are up here now and the facility is happy for our old lab to visit.
It is quite amazing how quickly any little problem just disappears when he comes to visit.

I break up dog biscuits for them and each has a handful of small pieces that they throw for Topaz. He catches out of the air.
Always gets them smiling.

Then, when I leave just before dinner time, there are normally 4 or 5 of the other residents waiting quietly in the foyer so they can have a pat as well.

I thought that was just because they were getting ready for dinner but the other day, as I was walking down the corridor to the exit, I heard one of the ladies saying quietly, “here he comes”.

It can take 15 minutes to get out the door when everyone wants a pat.
They are happy to talk with me but it is time with Topaz that really brightens their day.

It is nice for me also when such a simple thing brings such pleasure to the oldies.

Anyway, it is time for me to go home and collect Topaz if I am going to visit them today.

BASIC WEIGHT MANAGEMENT

The perfect diet should be combined with a healthy weight management or activity program. Weight management may conjure up that dreaded “exercise” word.

And exercise to some means pushing the body beyond limits, experiencing painful in joints, muscles, bones - everywhere. No pain no gain, right? Wrong. Instead, replace the word “exercise” with “activity” and incorporate this in your daily routine.

And a general rule of thumb for guidelines about “activity” would be to strive for a minimum of 30 minutes for adults or 60 minutes for children of moderate physical activity daily.

Individual activity goals depend upon each person’s health and weight goals and issues. Begin by checking with your medical advisor or healthcare physician to get a green light on which activities would be suitable for you, what your target weight range should be and a strategic plan to improve your health.

In a nutshell, during activities, calories are burned, pounds are shed in the long run. And the number of calories burned depends upon the duration and intensity or the activity. Slow and steady is the rule of thumb. And note daily progress.

For those who have never been very active at all, it may be advisable to begin slow like with walking 10 minutes each day, gradually building up time and distance with increased “brisk” pacing.

Even if you can’t get out to walk, bike or swim, take stairs instead of elevators and escalators.

Clean your house. Clean your car. Wash windows. Wash your dog.

Check out exercise videos, cassettes and workout books from the public library and put some of their ideas into action.

Check out your local fitness centers, YMCA, community center, too, for ideas. Partner up with a neighbor to walk or join a community volleyball team.

There are unlimited ways to be active and enjoy life at the same time without using painful weight loss strategies.

Natural Health & Beauty Recipes

CARROT CABBAGE SLAW

1/2 head cabbage
1 sm. onion
2 celery stalks
2 carrots
1 tbsp. mayonnaise
2 pkg. Artificial sweetner (or tblsp. honey)
1/2 tsp. black pepper
2 tbsp. vinegar
2 tbsp. lemon juice

Shred cabbage and carrots. Finely chop onion and celery. Mix together in a large bowl.
In a separate bowl, mix together sweetner, pepper, vinegar, lemon juice, and mayonnaise.
Pour over shredded vegetables and refrigerate. Makes 10 servings.
Exchanges: One serving equals 1 vegetable; calories: one serving equals 23 calories.

Natural Beauty recipe

Meadow Milk Bath

Powdered Milk, finely sifted--4 oz
Citric Acid--2 oz
Corn starch--2 oz
Vitamin E Oil--One 400 IU Capsule (or Grapefruit Seed Oil--30 drops)
Jasmine--60 drops

Blend the powdered milk and corn starch, then sift. Mix vitamin E (or grapefruit seed oil) and Jasmine in Citric Acid.
Make sure oils are thoroughly blended in the Citric Acid. Combine the Citric Acid blend with milk/corn starch blend.
Use 3 tablespoons per bath.

Tangerine Body Wash

Coriander--7 drops
Grapefruit--10 drops
Lavender--7 drops
Tangerine--40 drops

Unscented Shower Gel--4 oz (aloe gel or mild liquid soap may be substituted, with varying results.)

Balancing Bath Salts

Sea Salt--3 tbsp
Baking Soda--3 tbsp
Essential Oils--16 drops
Jar--4 oz

Choose 3 or 4 oils from these essential oils: Bergamot, Frankincense, Geranium, Lavender, Palmarosa, Rose, and Rosewood.
Add sea salt, baking soda and oils to jar. Gently shake to mix, mix well. Add to tub of running water.

Balancing Epson Salt Bath

Epson Salt--2 tbsp
Sea Salt--1 tbsp
Baking Soda--3 tbsp
Essential Oils--16 drops
Jar--4 oz

Choose 3 or 4 oils from these essential oils: Bergamot, Frankincense, Geranium, Lavender, Palmarosa, Rose, and Rosewood.

Add sea salt, baking soda, epson salts and oils to jar. Gently shake to mix, mix well. Add to tub of running water.

An Essential Guide To Gut Health


The Consequences of an Unhealthy Gut excerpt:

There are three primary consequences of an unhealthy gut: inflammation, nutrient absorption issues, and immune / autoimmune issues. All of these issues can have devastating health consequences.

Inflammation

It is believed that the gut is the primary cause of inflammation in the body.

Inflammation is a primary contributor to disease and also results in many uncomfortable symptoms. An inflamed body is an uncomfortable body.

There are several symptoms that can be caused by inflammation, including:

1. Insomnia.

It might be hard to believe, but gut inflammation has been shown to be a cause of insomnia.

If you have trouble sleeping, and you’re unable to pinpoint another cause, your sleepless nights might be due to gut inflammation.

2. Acne and other skin disorders.

It is believed that acne, psoriasis, and many other skin conditions can be caused by inflammation in the digestive tract.

3. Depression.

Inflammation that reaches the brain can influence the production and ratio of neurotransmitters.

4. Anxiety.

Anxiety without an identifiable cause can also be caused by inflammation.

5. Fatigue.

Inflammation can lead to imbalances in the body’s stress hormones, resulting in adrenal fatigue and overall fatigue throughout the body.

6. Brain fog.

Inflammation in the brain can be a cause of brain fog.

7. Hormone imbalances.

In females, gut inflammation can alter the levels of hormones and cause hot flashes, alter menstrual cycle length, and affect PMS symptoms.

In men, hormonal imbalances due to gut inflammation can result in fatigue, muscle loss, erectile dysfunction, and poor memory.

8. Thyroid-related symptoms.

Systemic inflammation in the body can make it more challenging for your body to utilize thyroid hormone properly.

This can result in symptoms of hypothyroidism, even if your thyroid hormone levels are normal.

Nutrient Absorption Issues

The nutrients that your body are able to absorb and utilize are affected by your gut bacteria.

While most of the absorption of nutrients in the human body occurs in the small intestine, there is also a significant amount of digestion that occurs in the large intestine.

Nearly all of the digestion that occurs in the large intestine is the result of bacterial activity. The bacteria ferment the remaining proteins and carbohydrates that made it beyond the small intestine.

These proteins and carbohydrates are converted into short-chain fatty acids which can be used for energy in the body.

Bacteria in the gut are also needed to synthesize vitamin B12, thiamin, folate, riboflavin, vitamin K, and biotin.

A healthy gut is necessary for synthesis and absorption of nutrients.

Autoimmune and Immune-Related Issues

Interestingly, gut bacteria are believed to play a huge role in autoimmune diseases.

It turns out that proteins produced by common gut bacteria can serve as the trigger for many autoimmune diseases such as ulcerative colitis and rheumatoid arthritis.

These proteins mimic proteins that naturally occur in the human body.

The immune system becomes sensitized to these proteins and begins attacking these proteins and the naturally occurring proteins.

Leaky gut syndrome can also contribute to autoimmune disorders. We’ll discuss leaky gut syndrome shortly.

An unhealthy gut can be the primary cause of many autoimmune disorders, such as:

1. Celiac disease.

Celiac disease is an immune disorder that prevents people from eating gluten without injury to the small intestine. The immune system is activated in the presence of gluten and attacks the small intestine.

2. Gluten intolerance.

There are many people that don’t have a true gluten allergy but are very sensitive to gluten in the diet.

3. Inflammatory bowel disease.

This is a broad term that describes disorders that involve chronic inflammation in the digestive tract.

It includes several diseases, the most common of which are ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

4. Depression.

There is mounting evidence that an autoimmune issue is at least partially responsible for some cases of depression.

5. Irritable bowel syndrome.

While celiac disease affects the small intestine, irritable bowel syndrome targets the large intestine.

Irritable bowel syndrome doesn’t cause permanent damage but can be troubling to manage. An immune system response or changes in gut bacteria are often to blame.

6. Food allergies and reactivity.

Bacteria imbalances in the gut have been implicated in many food allergy cases. Intolerances to certain foods can also be blamed on gut flora.

7. Joint pain.

Rheumatoid arthritis can cause great joint pain and long-term damage in the joints that are affected.

This is an autoimmune disease that affects 1.3 million people in the United States.

8. Hypothyroidism.

The most common cause of hypothyroidism is an autoimmune disease that is often treated by addressing infections in the gut.

Hopefully, it’s beginning to become clear just how important a healthy gut is for general health.

100 trillion bacteria have the potential to either cause a lot of challenges or to support good health.

Autoimmune diseases can be debilitating and life threatening.

Spending time in nature.

The most visible manifestation of spirit is nature, where we most fully encounter and interact with life's primal energies in the forms of earth, water, fire, and air.

Taking a walk in a park or hiking through the woods are easy and practical ways of reconnecting with nature, as are gardening, bike riding in the country, and camping and boating trips.

Orr recommends spending a few hours each day before fire for people who want to experience such benefits. Fire is also an important component of the vision quests undertaken by Native Americans to connect with the Great Spirit and discover their life purpose.

Of all nature's elements, perhaps the closest expression of Spirit is the air. Clean, fresh air is essential to health on all levels, and practicing conscious breathing as outlined above is a potent self-care method for restoring energy and making you more aware of the power of Spirit as it flows through you.

Regularly exposure to each of these four elements can help you become more conscious of how Spirit's loving intelligence sustains the world, while more deeply recognizing your place within it.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Reduce Risk of AMD

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of central vision loss in the elderly. Treatments are limited and hope lies in reducing the risk of the disease and preventing its development. A study reported at the Annual Meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, in Florida, May, 2003, provides new data supporting the effects of diet and nutrients, in lowering the risks of having a type of AMD that leads to blurred vision, and in severe cases, blindness.

The study, carried out by Dr. IP SanGiovanni and colleagues, from the National Eye Institute, in Bethesda MD, showed, that after taking into account other nutrient and non nutrient factors, that may affect the risk of AMD, a higher intake of omega n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) and fish was associated with decreased risk of having neovascular AMD.

Approximately 1.7 million people over 64, suffer from the severe form AMD, that leads to blindness. The macula is an area located in the center of the retina and is responsible for fine and detailed central vision. The degenerative changes associated with AMD include alterations in the retinal tissues and atrophy of the cells, that account for a number of different types of AMD, and the formation of new blood vessels (neovacularization) under the retina, that accounts for another type, called neovascular AMD, where leaking blood vessels distort the retina and cause blurred vision and loss of eye sight.

The studies indicate an independent association between fish intake and omega-3 fatty acids intake and neovascular AMD, showing that high intake of fish, or omega-3 fatty acids, halves- the risk of having the disease.

What is EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing - Psychotherapy Treatment?

Its purpose is one that’s intended to relieve stress and other negative feelings that can be caused by traumatic memories.

This can be living through a traumatic event yourself or witnessing it happen to someone else.

There are three different parts to the EMDR therapy that can be a help to people.

The first part is dealing with the events and memories that are responsible for the emotional problems you’ve been experiencing.

In this first part of dealing with the events, you’ll learn how to create new links that you can associate with the events and memories.

EMDR therapy works in that it can have you feeling safe and in control in your environment rather than afraid and feeling like the world is not a safe place for you to be in.

The second part that can help people who use EMDR techniques is targeting the present situations that might provoke your distress.

During the sessions, while you’re going through the phases, you’ll be doing work designed to desensitize any external and internal triggers you may have.

Many people have certain triggers that will cause them to feel as powerless and scared as they were at the time the actual event took place.

The person can feel like he or she is actual back in the event or seeing it again.

EMDR can help you overcome the emotions and issues that are connected with that. The third part involves using imagery.

What Problems Can Be Helped by EMDR?

Extremely traumatic events such as sexual and physical abuse can be successfully treated.

These feelings can be worked through during EMDR.
