Many people are aware of the digestive problem, Diverticulitis. This refers to a problem caused from the formation of pockets (diverticuli) in the wall of the large intestine.

When this condition is is present but the pockets (diverticuli) and only small and there are few if any symptoms the condition is know as Diverticulosis.

About 10 percent of Americans over the age of 40 have diverticulosis. The condition becomes more common as people age. About half of all people over the age of 60 have diverticulosis.

What Causes Diverticulosis ?

Diverticular diseases common in developed or industrialised countries, particularly the United States, England and Australia where low fiber diets are common. The disease is in countries of Asia and Africa, where people eat hight fiber vegetable diets. Some fibers dissolves easily in water (soluble fiber). It takes on a soft jelly-like texture in the intestines. Some fiber passes almost unchanged through the intestines (insoluble fiber). Both kinds of fiber help make stools soft and easy to pass. Fiber also prevents constipation.

Constipation ,makes the muscles strain to move stool that is too hard. It is the main cause of increased pressure in the colon. the excess pressure might be the cause of the weak spots in the colon that bulge out and become diverticula.

The formation of these pockets is due to an increase in pressure brought upon by a person straining whilst moving their bowel.

In the initial stages this condition is called is called diverticulosis. When the diverticuli have a build up of mucus which leads to infection then there are symptoms of pain, bloating, and worse and the condition is known as diverticulitis.
